Memorial Day Flood Volunteers Urgently Needed
Serve San Marcos Regional Volunteer Center Helping Rebuild and Recover
Volunteers are urgently needed as Memorial Day flood relief efforts in the San Marcos region shift from short-term clean up to long-term rebuilding. Daily projects include debris removal, helping at a free furniture warehouse for flood survivors, distributing flood related information, and repair of flooded homes. No special skills are needed and projects are available for individuals as well as groups. The Serve San Marcos Regional Volunteer Center immediately seeks volunteers to help with ongoing Memorial Day flood rebuilding efforts. Serve San Marcos partners with non-profits and government agencies throughout Hays, Caldwell, Blanco and Guadalupe Counties to match volunteers with local flood assistance projects.
Ongoing Volunteer Projects
At www.serveSanMarcos.org, groups and individuals can quickly find ongoing volunteers projects that meet their interests and schedule. Ongoing projects include:
- Helping flood affected homeowners move remaining debris to the street curb before the August 2nd debris removal deadline.
- Scheduling volunteers to help flood survivors obtain donated furniture at a flood recovery household goods warehouse operated by Austin Disaster Relief Network.
- Repair damaged homes, with no prior experience needed, under the experienced volunteer construction leadership of Southside Community Center and the St. Bernard Project
- Distribute flood recovery information in neighborhoods through organizations such as Centro Esperanza in Guadalupe County.
- Additional volunteer opportunities will be published by the Serve San Marcos Regional Volunteer Center as additional agencies and non-profits launch long-term flood recovery projects in the coming weeks.
Volunteers hours worth money in recovery funding
Qualified volunteer hours may be applied by local communities as a financial credit toward flood recovery efforts. Serve San Marcos helps volunteers complete the necessary paperwork and correctly tracks the volunteer hours for the volunteers. Each donated volunteer hour may be worth $20 or more to local communities if appropriately tracked. Volunteers MUST register with the Serve San Marcos Regional Volunteer Center before helping on the projects to make sure their hours are credited toward recovery funding.
Volunteering Guidelines

Minimum age of volunteers is 14. Minors 14 -17 must have parental supervision.

Volunteers need to wear closed toed shoes (work boots preferred), long pants, hats,sun screen, work gloves, safety glasses, if possible, bring your own tools, hammers, crow bars, box cutters, handsaws or chainsaws.

Please bring your own lunch and we provide drinks. A personal water bottle is handy.
