Texas State Sweeps Texas Tech To Open Roadrunner Roundup

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas State volleyball team recorded a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-20) victory over Big 12 member Texas Tech Thursday afternoon in its first of three matches at the UTSA-hosted Roadrunner Roundup.

 

The win moved the Bobcats to 7-6 overall and marked its second three-set sweep of the season. The setback moves Texas Tech to 9-3 overall.

 

Junior right side hitter Jordan Kohl led the Bobcats with 12 kills at a .318 clip with four digs and a block. Senior outside hitter Shelby Vas Matt picked up eight kills and recorded a team-leading 14 digs and three blocks.

 

Texas State finished the match hitting .293 to Texas Tech’s .136. The Bobcats also finished with advantages in kills (40-36), blocks (10-5), digs (46-41) and service aces (6-2).

 

Texas State took a 4-1 lead in the opening set, then used a 7-3 run to take a commanding 11-4 lead. Texas Tech closed the set to a single point at 17-16, but back-to-back kills by Vas Matt gave the Bobcats all the separation they would need as en route to a 25-21 set win. Vas Matt and Lauren Kirch each had four kills and Jaliyah Bolden two block to lead Texas State in the set.

 

Texas Tech kept within two points through the beginning of the second set, but Texas State pieced together a 9-2 run, expanding a 13-11 lead to 21-13 before closing out the game 25-17. The Bobcats hit .323 in the set while limiting the Red raiders to a paltry .108.

 

Texas State fell behind Texas Tech by as many as four early in the third set, but kills by Kirch and Kohl along with a service ace by Ali Hubicsak and a Red Raider attack error leveled the score at 12-12. The next seven points produced three ties and three lead changes with Marissa Kindred putting Texas State up 16-15 with a service ace. The match stayed close for a few more points before the Bobcats pulled away for the 25-20 win. Bolden and Kohl accounted for five and four kills, respectively, in the final set.

 

Texas State faces the host Roadrunners in its second match of the tournament this evening (Sept. 15) at 6 p.m.
