A San Marcos man has been charged in the shooting death of San Marcos Police Officer Kenneth Copeland.
Stewart Thomas Mettz (DOB 9/18/1966) has been charged with capital murder of a peace officer, as well as injury to an elderly person and assault causing bodily injury/family violence. He awaits transport to the Hays County Law Enforcement Center pending his release from an Austin hospital, where he is under 24-hour guard by Hays County Sheriff’s officers.
Bond has been set at $500,000 for the family violence and injury charges; Justice of the Peace Maggie H. Moreno has ordered no bond for the capital murder charge.
I was saddened by the untimely demise of officer Kenneth Copeland whom I had met earlier this year at the City Park. My first impression of him that he was a genuinely a good person with a great personality. My heartfelt condolences to his wife and children. May you find solace knowing that he is back with the giver of life.
