Bobcats Run-Rule Eagles 14-4 to Win Series

STATESBORO, Ga.The Texas State baseball team (23-13, 9-6 Sun Belt) combined to score 11 runs in the third and fourth innings to defeat Georgia Southern (20-16, 8-7 Sun Belt) 14-4 in seven innings at J.I. Clements Stadium Sunday afternoon to take the Sun Belt Conference series. It is the second time this season the Bobcats have run-ruled a Sun Belt opponent on getaway day.

Connor Reich improved to 5-1 on the season after going 6.1 innings. He struck out eight while giving up four runs on nine hits. Suffering the loss was Daniel Collins (3-1) after he gave up four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings.

Recording the final two outs for TXST was Zachary Leigh as he recorded a strikeout to conclude the game.

Dalton Shuffield was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Both Jaylen Hubbard and Felipe Rodriguez had three hits apiece as they each fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, scored twice and drove in two runs.

Plating a game-high three runs was John Wuthrich. He also scored two runs along with Will Hollis and Jaxon Williams.

The Eagles struck first in the bottom of the first. After a walk, Tyler Martin tripled down the left field line to put GS on the scoreboard. Mason McWhorter then sent the second pitch he saw to right field for a RBI double to put the Bobcats down 2-0 early.

Rodriguez led off the third by singling to left field. Williams would also single, this time to right field, and Will Hollis followed by drawing a free pass to load the bases. On the first pitch he saw, Wuthrich laced a single to left center that plated two runs and tied the game.

A balk moved both base runners into scoring position, which paid off as Benton grounded out to the shortstop to bring home another run. Two batters late, Shuffield laced a 3-2 pitch to left field for a RBI single to increase TXST’s advantage to 4-2.

Rodriguez increased the lead with a solo shot over the left field wall to lead off the fourth. Hubbard followed with a 440 foot blast to center field as the Bobcats hit back-to-back home runs for the second straight game.

Following a bloop double down the right field line by Williams, Hollis and Wuthrich were walked to load the bases. A wild pitch that bounced up the first baseline scored a run and then Skyler Valentine grounded out to the shortstop to bring home the fourth run of the inning.

Shuffield ripped a 2-2 offering to left field for his second straight RBI single to increase the lead to seven runs. Rodriguez doubled down the left field line that hit off the third baseman’s glove to bring home another run. The seventh run of the game was added on a seeing-eye single through the left side from Hubbard.

In the top of the sixth, Hubbard laced a double to left center and Williams drew a walk. Two batters later, Wuthrich laced a 2-2 offering thru the left side for a RBI single and increase the lead to 10.

GS got back to within single-digits when Noah Ledford sent a 1-0 pitch over the right center field fence for a solo shot.

The Bobcats added two more runs in the next half inning. The first was on a RBI single into center field by Ryan Newman. Shuffield scored the second run on a passed ball that got all the way back to the backstop for a 14-3 lead.

For the second straight inning, GS hit a solo home run from Martin to cut its deficit to 10 runs. It would be the final run of the game as Leigh concluded the game on a swinging strikeout.

TXST is back home on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Houston Baptist. It is the first of five consecutive home games.

Hollis’ and Wuthrich’s Blasts Bobcats to 8-2 Victory

STATESBORO, Ga.Junior Will Hollis and sophomore John Wuthrich hit back-to-back home runs as part of a seven-run third inning to lead the Texas State baseball team (22-13, 8-6 Sun Belt) to an 8-2 win over Georgia Southern (20-15, 8-6 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium.

Earning the win on the mound was Nicholas Fraze (5-3) after striking out five in 5.2 innings. He also surrendered two runs on five hits and three walks. Taking the loss was Tyler Owens (4-1) after he gave up seven runs on eight hits.

Throwing an inning of relief was Kyle Bradford and Brent Hebert. Brandon Lewis went 1.1 innings out of the bullpen as well.

Hollis finished 3-for-5 and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Posting two hits apiece was Travon Benton, Felipe Rodriguez, Dalton Shuffield and Jaxon Williams. Both of Rodriguez’s hits were doubles and Newman added another two-bagger as well.

Following back-to-back singles by Jaylen Hubbard and Williams with one out in the third, Hollis blasted a 1-2 pitch over the Blue Monster in right field for his second home run of the season. On the very next pitch, Wuthrich smashed the offering off the scoreboard in left field for a solo shot. It is the first time the Bobcats have hit back-to-back homers this season.

Skyler Valentine drew a walk on four pitches and two batters later, Shuffield singled to right center to put runners on the corners. The sophomore shortstop then stole his eighth base of the season to put two runners in the corners. The stolen base paid off as Newman hit a long blooper that just fell in fair territory down the right field line for a two-RBI double to extend the lead.

A 3-2 pitch was laced down the left field line just past the diving third baseman for a RBI double for Rodriguez as TXST took a 7-0 advantage.

The Eagles got runners on the corners in the fourth. They would score a run when Noah Searcy reached on a fielders’ choice after hitting a slow dribbler to Shuffield, who’s only play was getting the runner at second.

Rodriguez led off the top of the sixth with a double to left center. He would move on to third as Hubbard grounded out to first on a check swing trying to protect himself on a high pitch inside. With the infield in, Williams sent a 1-0 offering back up the middle for a RBI single and increase the Bobcats’ lead to 8-1.

The bottom of the inning saw GS get two in scoring position after back-to-back singles and a wild pitch moving both runners into scoring position. A ground out by Christian Avant to Shuffield brought home a run to return to a six-run advantage for TXST.

Hebert finished the game by inducing a 6-4-3 double play after allowing a one-out single.

Sunday’s series finale start time was moved up to 10 a.m. CT.

Texas State Drop Series Opener at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Texas State baseball team (21-13, 7-6 Sun Belt) fell 12-0 in the series opener against Georgia Southern (20-14, 8-5 Sun Belt) at J.I. Clements Stadium Friday evening in a contest that was delayed nearly two hours because of lightning.

Suffering the loss on the mound was Hunter McMahon (4-4). He struck out five in four inning while giving up six runs on six hits. Picking up the victory was Seth Shuman (4-4) after throwing seven scoreless innings and striking out eight.

Also seeing action on the rubber for TXST was Reece Gould and Dontae Woodard. Gould recorded his first two collegiate strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Woodard worked the final 1.2 innings with a strikeout and gave up one run.

Posting the only hits, all singles, of the game for the Bobcats was Felipe Rodriguez, Dalton Shuffield and Jaxon Williams. Also reaching base were Jaylen Hubbard, John Wuthrich and Skyler Valentine. Both Hubbard and Valentine were able to draw a walk apiece and Wuthirch was hit by a pitch his first time at the plate.

GS opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with four runs. One run scored on a Nolan Tressler double that landed just fair down the right field line. Mason McWhorter followed with a three-run home run two batters later to complete the scoring for the frame.

The game was halted because of lightning in the area at 6:32 p.m. CDT with one out in the bottom of the third and a runner on second. The teams were about to resume at 7:10 p.m. before another strike within the eight-mile radius hit and causing another delay.

At 8:17 p.m. CDT, the game resumed and saw GS tack on two runs in the frame to extend its advantage to 6-0.

The Eagles would tack on another run in the sixth when Blake Evans singled through the left side in the drawn in infield. Their advantage was extended even more in the seventh when GS scored five runs.

Bell, Oltmann lead Texas State in 5-3 victory

CONWAY, S.C. – The Texas State softball team (22-17, 10-5 Sun Belt) clipped the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (29-12, 9-7 Sun Belt) in game one of the weekend series at St. John Stadium on Friday evening by a score of 5-3.

KEY MOMENTS

– Sophomore infielder Tara Oltmann took full advantage of the wind blowing out to right center as she crushed her third home run of the season. The two-run shot opened the scoring and gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

– Texas State extended the lead in the top of the third inning. Sophomore infielder ArieAnn Bell ripped a single through the middle of the infield to plate Oltmann from second.

– Bell delivered her second RBI in the top of the fifth inning. She lined a double into the right field gap to score junior infielder Bailee Carter from second.

– Coastal Carolina found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore catcher Sam Sack lined a solo home run over the right field fence.

– TXST extended the lead back to four runs on a suicide squeeze from junior outfielder Christiana McDowell in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore pinch runner Brianna Sannemraced home from third to score on the play.

– The home team made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning when freshman designated player Mackenzie Beyer hit a two-run home run to left center. Senior outfielder Mari Cranek made a game-ending catch on the warning track to seal the victory at 5-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

– Sophomore pitcher Meagan King (14-8) went the distance to earn the victory. She yielded three earned runs on five hits and a walk. She fanned a trio of Chanticleer batters.

– Bell led the Bobcat offense with a 2-for-3 afternoon at the plate. She recorded two RBI, a double, and was hit by a pitch. Bell was the lone Bobcat to record a multi-hit game.

– Oltmann finished 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk drawn, and a stolen base.

– Texas State drew seven walks to one by Coastal Carolina. Junior infielder Hailey MacKayand Carter each induced a pair of walks. TXST averages 4.4 free passes per game.

NOTABLES

– King has won 10-straight decisions in the circle. Her last loss came against conference-leading Louisiana on March 8.

– Oltmann leads the Bobcats with 12 extra-base hits. She has tagged three home runs and nine doubles during her second season in the Maroon and Gold. Oltmann also tops Bobcat hitters with 30 RBI.

– The Bobcats advance to 14-1 on the season when tallying at least five runs.

– Texas State improves to 6-0 in the all-time series against Coastal Carolina. The Bobcats are a perfect 3-0 in Conway after sweeping the weather-shortened series in 2017.

– The Bobcats will continue the three-game weekend series against Coastal Carolina with a 1 p.m. CT first pitch on April 13.  

Women’s Tennis Falls 4-0 at Coastal Carolina

SAN MARCOS, Texas– The Texas State women’s tennis team opened its final road trip of the regular season with a 4-0 loss against Coastal Carolina Friday morning at the Stevens Center in Conway, S.C.
 
The Bobcats (6-12, 2-7 Sun Belt) fell behind early in the match when Coastal Carolina (14-7, 7-2 Sun Belt) clinched the doubles point.
 
On center court, the Bobcat duo of Ana Perez and Julia Navajo-Melendez dropped a 6-1 decision against Coastal Carolina’s tandem of Somer Dalla-Bona and Jennifer Brown.
 
On court No. 3, the pairing of Andrea Fuchs and Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez suffered a 6-3 setback against the team of Alexa Tiefel and Alicja Zduniak.
 
Meanwhile, Texas State’s combination of Rishona Israel-Lewis and Joy Chia Ming Ming were ahead 5-4 against Jessie Mount and Viktorija Demcenkova on court 2 when their match was halted after the Chanticleers clinched the doubles point.  

The Bobcats were stymied in singles action as they dropped three straight completed matches. On court three, Navajo-Melendez fell 6-1, 6-1 against Dalla-Bona.
 
Chia Ming Ming battled Zduniak in a tight second set before dropping a 6-0, 6-4 decision. Coastal Carolina clinched the victory when Fuchs suffered a 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 5 match.
 
The three remaining matches were suspended after Coastal Carolina tallied the clinching fourth point.
 
Murcia-Rodriguez held a 1-0 lead in the third set after winning the second set 6-2 against Tiefel on court six. Perez was tied 5-5 in the second set against Demcenkova after narrowing dropping the first set 6-4 in the top-seeded match.
 
Texas State closes out the road trip on Sunday morning when they play Appalachian State at 9 a.m. in Boone, N.C.

Baseball Travels to Face Georgia Southern

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team looks to carry its momentum after upsetting 12th-ranked Texas A&M on Tuesday into this weekend’s Sun Belt Conference series at Georgia Southern.
 
All three games will be played at J.I. Clements Stadium. Friday’s contest is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. CDT start and Saturday’s contest is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. CDT. Sunday’s series finale will see first pitch at 11:30 a.m. CDT.
 
Entering the weekend, the Bobcats are 21-12 overall and 7-5 in the Sun Belt while the Eagles are 18-14 on the year and also 7-5 in conference play.
 
Both Friday’s and Saturday’s games will be streamed on ESPN+ while Sunday’s is on True Blue TV through Georgia Southern’s website and is free to view. Live stats will also be available for all three contests. There will not be any radio this weekend due to Saturday’s spring football game.

Scouting Texas State

Texas State looks to rebound in Sun Belt play after dropping two of three against Troy last weekend. The Bobcats are 8-4 in true road games this season with a 3-3 mark against conference foes.
 
Five batters are hitting over .300 led by Jaylen Hubbard at .338. The senior third baseman also paces the team with 44 hits, four triples and 11 hit by pitches. He has also scored 32 times, driven in 18 runs and shares the team lead of seven stolen bases with Dalton Shuffield, who is second with a .325 batting average.
 
Will Hollis improved his average to .325 after going 2-for-3 at the plate against the Aggies. His 10 doubles and 28 walks on the most by any TXST player. His 22 RBIs are the second most behind Skyler Valentine’s 24.
 
Four home runs have come off the bat of Jaxon Williams. The junior infielder is hitting .315 with a team-high 35 runs scored. Also batting over .300 is Travon Benton at .310.
 
Along with his RBI total, Valentine also has a Texas State best five homers. He is tied for the team lead with two outfield assists with John Wuthrich.
 
Scheduled to start on the mound this weekend is Nicholas Fraze, Hunter McMahon and Connor Reich. Fraze is 4-3 with a 5.36 ERA and a team-high 51 strikeouts. McMahon comes in with a 4-3 record, 40 strikeouts, a 3.58 ERA and picked up his first save of the season on Tuesday in College Station, Texas. Reich leads the Bobcats with a 2.29 ERA and 51 innings pitched. He is also 4-1 and has struck out 50 while walking just eight.
 
Scouting Georgia Southern

Georgia Southern is coming off a 7-2 win on Wednesday over Kennesaw State at home. The win improved the Eagles to 9-6 at J.I. Clements Stadium this season.
 
Steven Curry leads GS in batting average (.374), hits (46) and runs scored (28) while recording one of the team’s two triples. His 22 RBIs, eight doubles and 20 walks are the second most on the team. The only other player hitting over .300 is Tyler Martin at .302. He has hit two home runs and driven in a team-high 23 runs while ranking third with six steals.
 
Pacing the Eagles with six homers is Noah Ledford. He has also scored and plated 18 runs. Noah Searcy cranked to home runs against the Owls to give him three for the season, along with 14 RBIs and 12 runs scored.
 
Jason Swan and Austin Thompson lead the team with nine and eight stole bases, respectively.
 
On the mound, Seth Shuman enters with a 3-4 record, 3.32 ERA and a Sun Belt leading 65 striking outs in 43.1 innings. Tyler Owens, Saturday’s starter, sports a 2.43 ERA, 4-0 mark and has struck out 31 in 37 frames. Daniel Collins, the scheduled starter for the series finale, is 3-0 with a 4.74 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 38 innings.
 
Both Hayden Harris (2-0, 1.61 ERA, 28 K) and Cole Whitney (3-2, 1.39 ERA, 29 K) have recorded four saves.
 
All-Time Series
Texas State leads the all-time series 6-4 but Georgia Southern has won three of the last four meetings. Last season saw the Eagles win the final two games of the three-game series in San Marcos.
 
When playing in Statesboro, the Bobcats are 3-1 all-time. They swept the series in 2016, which was the first-ever meeting between the programs, but lost in the 2017 Sun Belt Championship semifinals by the score of 11-5.

Texas A&M Invitational on tap for the Bobcats

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State track and field teams jump back into the heat of battle by competing at the Texas A&M Invitational on April 12-13 at EB Cushing Stadium in College Station.

The field is set with ten teams total, including three ranked in the top 10 of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Poll in Texas A&M (men-No. 2, women-No.2) and Houston (men-No.10). Other universities in attendance along with the Bobcats will be Air Force, Arizona State, Rice, Sam Houston State, TCU, UTEP, and UTSA.
 
How To Follow
The Texas A&M Invitational will be timed by Flash Results. Live stats and heat sheets will be made accessible at txstatebobcats.com. Day one is set to be full of field events only, beginning at 4 p.m. with the women’s hammer throw and women’s pole vault. Day two will start with the men’s pole vault at 3 p.m. and the track events will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the women’s 4×100-meter relay.
 

Bobcats Pacing The Way 
The Bobcats enter the Texas A&M Invitational with six leading marks in the Sun Belt Conference. Senior T’Mond Johnson headlines the group with a 19.43m (63-9) throw in the men’s shot put, and a 53.77m (176-5) hurl in the discus throw.

Junior Ben Collerton scored 7,218 points in the decathlon and senior Kyle Denomme ran the 800-meter run in 1:52.31 to round out the men’s top performers.

On the women’s side, sophomore Tina Sierra ran a 17:17.24 in the women’s 5000-meter run, and true freshman Live Hilton has a 6.20-meter (20-4.25) mark in the women’s long jump. All-in-all, the Bobcats enter the weekend with 47 total top 10 Sun Belt Conference marks (25 on men’s side, 22 on women’s side).

Taylor to attend NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State freshman guard Kennedy Taylor has been selected by the Sun Belt Conference to attend the NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum taking place this week in Orlando, Fla.

“I am thrilled to be the Bobcat representing Texas State and the Sun Belt Conference at the NCAA Leadership Forum,” Taylor said. “I look forward to collaborating with other leaders to strengthen our campuses, sports domain, and overall college experience.”

Since 2010, the NCAA has held the Leadership Forum for Divisions I, II, and III at the same site on the same weekend, after previously hosting several forums broken down regionally.  Student-athletes, coaches, and administrators meet at the Forum to discuss the student-athlete experience.

“We are all so excited that Kennedy has this special opportunity to represent Texas State University and the Sun Belt Conference un the much-heralded NCAA Leadership Forum,” head coach Zenarae Antoine said. “I know that she will take this opportunity and utilize it to the best of her ability. It is fitting that Kennedy was chosen because she is a great example of what it means to be a student-athlete.”

The Leadership Forum takes place in Orlando from April 11-14.

Six-run seventh propels TXST softball over UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas State softball team (21-17) rallied late to down the UTSA Roadrunners (17-22) at Roadrunner Field on Wednesday evening by a score of 8-6. Texas State registered six runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the comeback win.

KEY MOMENTS

– Texas State struck first and scored one run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Tara Oltmann singled up the middle. She promptly stole second base and raced around to score on a single from junior infielder Hailey MacKay and a UTSA error.

– UTSA found an offensive rhythm in the bottom of the third inning. The Roadrunners secured a one-out walk, a two-out bloop single, and a three-run home run from senior outfielder Bailee Baldwin.

– Freshman catcher Caitlyn Rogers cut the UTSA lead in half in the top of the fourth inning. She smashed a solo home run to left field to make the score 3-2 in favor of the home team.

– The Roadrunners managed to get the run back in the bottom of the fifth inning. UTSA put the pressure on the Bobcats with some small ball. The defense momentarily cracked to allow an unearned run to plate on a fielding error.

– Texas State scored six runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning to seize control of the game. The biggest hit of the frame came on a bases-load double from freshman pinch hitter Cassie Valdez. The extra-base hit scored a pair.

– The home team plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the seventh to bring the final tally to 8-6 in favor of the Bobcats.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

– Sophomore pitcher Meagan King (13-8) continued her winning ways in the circle. She has won nine-straight decisions. King finished with a line of 7.0 innings pitched, three earned runs, a pair of walks, and three strikeouts.

– Texas State piled up 11 hits, including multi-hit games from junior outfielder Christiana McDowell, senior outfielder Mari Cranek, MacKay and Valdez. Both the latter players notched two RBI.

– Bobcat hitters did not strike out in the game and walked five times.  

NOTABLES

– McDowell recorded her 46th hit of the season in the top of the third inning. That figure ranks as a career-high in a single season for McDowell.

– The home run hit by Rogers in the top of the fourth inning marked the first of her young collegiate career. She became the seventh Bobcat to homer this season.

– The victory is the first for the Bobcats in which TXST entered the seventh inning trailing. Texas State had previously won only one ballgame in which the team trailed after four innings.

– With the win, Texas State tied the all-time series at 43-43 between the two schools. The Bobcats avenged a season-opening 3-2 loss at the hands of the Roadrunners.

– The contest was tabbed the #SetTheExpectation game as part of Sexual Awareness month. Both teams wore ribbons in support of the organization. Founder Brenda Tracy threw out the first pitch prior to the game.

– The Bobcats will return to Sun Belt Conference action with a three-game weekend series against Coastal Carolina. The set will begin at 3 p.m. CT on April 12 at St. John’s Stadium. 

Bobcats Stun 12th-Ranked Aggies 5-3 Behind Big First Inning

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A five-run first inning was all the Texas State baseball team (21-12) need to shock 12th-ranked Texas A&M (25-9-1) Tuesday night in front of 4,771 hostile fans at Blue Bell Park. The victory is the first for the Bobcats in College Station since Apr. 11, 2006.

TXST jumped on the Aggie’s starter Dustin Saenz early as Jaylen Hubbard sent the first pitch of the game into the left center field gap for a double. After a sacrifice bunt by Dalton Shuffield moved Hubbard to third, Saenz walked the next two batters to load the bases.

Hubbard faked stealing home and got Saenz to balk to bring him home for the first run of the game. After a walk to Will Hollis reloaded the bases, John Wuthrich blasted a 1-1 pitch into the netting behind the left field wall for a grand slam and put Texas State ahead 5-0.

TAMU was able to load the bases on two singles and a walk with no one gone in the bottom half of the inning. Garrett Herrmann was able to get out of the jam without allowing a run by striking out the next two batters and then inducing a ground out to back to himself.

The Aggies recorded three straight singles to start the bottom of the fourth with Aaron Walters plate the first run of the game for the home team. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, which paid off for TAMU as Bryce Blaum hit a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the lead to three. A single back up the middle from Chandler Morris plated another run to make it a 5-3 contest.

In the bottom of the seventh, TAMU got two batters on after a passed ball on the third strike and a hit by pitch. Connor Reich rebounded to strikeout the next batter and induce a fly out to end the ending.

The Bobcats had a chance to add an insurance run when Felipe Rodriguez led off the frame with a double down the left field line. However, the Aggies closer Kasey Kalich got the next three batters out to keep it a two-run game.

Hunter McMahon came on walked the first batter he faced. The sophomore right-hander rebounded by striking out Blaum, getting Morris to fly out to center and then inducing a ground out to Ryan Newman at first to end the game.

Picking up the victory on the mound was Brent Hebert as he improves to 2-1 on the season after he threw a perfect fifth inning. McMahon earned his first save of his career. Suffering the loss was Dustin Saenz (2-1) as he only got one out but gave up all five runs on two hits and three walks.

Garrett Herrmann started and went 3.1 innings with three strikeouts while giving up three runs on seven hits. Throwing a scoreless inning out of the bullpen was Nicholas Fraze, Brandon Lewis and Connor Reich.

Hollis record a team-high two hits and one of the team’s four extra-base hits. Wuthrich’s grand slam was the first of his career and first homer of the season.

Next up for the Bobcats is a Sun Belt Conference series at Georgia Southern that begins on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CDT.
 

Women’s Tennis Hosts UT Arlington on Tuesday

SAN MARCOS, Texas Playing in its final home match of the season, the Texas State women’s tennis team (6-11, 2-6 Sun Belt) fell by a final score of 4-0 against UTA (14-7, 5-2 Sun Belt) in a Sun Belt Conference contest Tuesday afternoon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
 
The Mavericks captured the doubles point after winning a pair of matches on court one and court three. Ana Perez and Julia Navajo-Melendez dropped a 6-1 decision against Liz Chileno and Carla Pots on center court.
 
Andrea Fuchs and Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez suffered their first loss as a doubles team this spring, falling 6-2 against Almudena Boza and Lucia Natal in the No. 3 match.
 
UTA clinching the doubles point halted the final doubles match on court two where Texas State’s Rishona Israel-Lewis and Joy Chia Ming Ming were leading 4-2.
 
The Mavericks maintained control of the match by taking four of the first sets in the six singles matches. The matchup between Fuchs and Boza on court five was the first completed with Fuchs suffering a 6-1, 7-5 loss.
 
Murcia-Rodriguez also battled Carla Vives in a highly competitive match on court six where she dropped the first set, 6-4, and the second set, 7-6, after losing the tiebreaker, 7-4.
 
The Mavericks clinched the victory when Perez suffered a 7-5, 6-2 loss against Pons on court one.
 
Texas State will close out the regular season at Coastal Carolina Friday morning and at Appalachian State on Sunday morning.

 

Trip to College Station and 12th-Ranked Aggies Await Bobcats

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Coming off its second walk-off win of the season, the Texas State baseball team hits the road this week beginning with a trip to 10th-ranked Texas A&M on Tuesday. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Blue Bell Park.

Coming into the game, the Bobcats are 20-12 on the season while the Aggies are 25-8-1 overall.

The game will be streamed on the SEC Network+. Both Bill Culhane and Brant Freeman will have the radio call on KTSW 89.9 FM and live stats will also be available.

Probable Starting Pitchers

Scouting Texas State
Texas State dropped the weekend series to Troy but salvaged the series finale with an 8-7 win in 10 innings thanks to John Wuthrich’s walk-off single. The Bobcats enter the game 5-2 in midweek games this season and have won their last two over Rice (7-6) and UTSA (14-1).

Five batters are hitting over .300 led by Jaylen Hubbard at .339. The senior third baseman also paces the team with 43 hits, four triples and 10 hit by pitches. He has also scored 31 times, driven in 18 runs and stolen six bases.

After going 8-for-13 against the Trojans, Dalton Shuffield raised his batting average to .336. He paces the squad with seven stolen bases and is second with 41 hits. Travon Benton also had strong outings at the plate going 5-for-11 to enter the game batting .333. The senior outfielder has hit three home runs, recorded 13 RBIs and scored 14 times.

Will Hollis (.314) and Jaxon Williams (.317) are the last two Bobcats with a batting average over .300. Hollis leads the team with 27 walks and nine doubles, and is second with 22 RBIs. Williams comes in with a team-high 34 runs scored and is second with four homers.

Pacing the TXST with five home runs and 24 RBIs is Skyler Valentine. He has scored 21 runs and is 5-for-6 stealing bases.

Scheduled to start on the mound Tuesday is Garrett Herrmann. The junior right-hander will be making his seventh midweek start of the year. He enters with a 3-1 record, 3.41 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 29.0 innings.

Scouting Texas A&M
Texas A&M is coming off a 2-2 week in which they defeated LSU and Texas once apiece. The Aggies are 17-5-1 at home and will be playing their first games at Blue Bell Park since the last weekend of March against Missouri, a series that was split 1-1-1.

Braden Shewmake leads the team with a .326 batting average, 46 hits, 32 RBIs, five sacrifice flies and four triples. He is also one of three players with seven doubles along with Logan Foster and Mikey Hoehner. The duo of Foster and Hoehner have 36 hits apiece.

Cam Blake is the fourth Aggie hitting over .300 at .301. Of his 25 hits, six have been doubles and one has gone for a triple.

Bryce Blaum is 11-for-12 stealing bases and has hit a team leading four home runs. He has scored 38 times and plated 14 runs.

The probable starter for tomorrow is Dustin Saenz. The sophomore left-hander is 2-0 with one save, 2.84 ERA and 13 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .287 off him spanning 10 games including four starts.

All-Time Series

Texas A&M leads the all-time series 44-13 and have won five straight meetings. Last season saw the Aggies win 7-5 in College Station.

The last win for Texas State was on Apr. 23, 2013 by the score of 4-1 at Bobcat Ballpark. The Bobcats are 8-32 when playing TAMU on the road with the last victory being a 5-1 contest on Apr. 11, 2006.
