TAB Calls On Texas Legislature To Support Smart, Statewide Regulation Of Ridesharing

Proposed Legislation Ensures Clarity, Consistency in Regulations Governing New Technologies

AUSTIN, TEXAS- The following statement on House Bill 2440 (Rep. Chris Paddie) that addresses statewide regulation of ridesharing should be attributed to Bill Hammond, CEO of the Texas Association of Business.

“By embracing smart regulation of new technologies like ridesharing, our state leaders are proposing common sense legislation that is consistent with Texas’ long-running tradition of advancing public policy that encourages competition, increases consumer choice, bolsters innovation and spurs job creation.

“In recent years, we’ve been witnessing patchworks of regulations confuse consumers, complicate state and local enforcement and saddle businesses with higher costs for doing business in Texas. We can’t afford to continue down that path.

“HB 2440 defends against onerous and conflicting regulations that risk stifling Texas’ technology community and limiting competition and consumer choice in transportation.

“Ridesharing technology can be transformational for urban communities and smaller towns.  We should be working to ensure technology reaches more Texans, not limiting its ability to serve our state.

“Today’s ridesharing application could be the seed of the next great technological leap – developed here in Texas – that can address the myriad of priorities and concerns that impact every Texan from education to health care, from transportation to energy production and efficiency.

“Let’s make sure technology, investment and innovation flourishes, not falters in Texas. HB 2440 does just that and Rep. Paddie should be applauded for taking the lead on this important legislation.”
