Live Music Comes To The San Marcos Public Library
Tracy Weinberg will perform a free concert at the San Marcos Public Library on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.
With a vocal style influenced by Louis Armstrong, Tom Waits, and Leon Redbone, Tracy’s music covers a wide range of blues, folk, and swing, reflecting the variety of music found in Central Texas.
Weinberg exemplifies the musical variety and eclecticism found in the San Marcos / Austin area.
His unique singing style and accompaniment on the dojo (resonator banjo) and banjo create a fresh acoustic sound that is sure to please your musical palette.
Raised in the Chicago area near Ravinia Park, Tracy had the good fortune to hear live music ranging from the Chicago Symphony to Ravi Shankar to Iron Butterfly.
Taking up banjo at age 16 because “everyone else played guitar,” he has always had eclectic tastes and played non-traditional music on the banjo. His musical influences include Louis Armstrong, Leon Redbone, Tom Waits, and Bela Fleck.
In the midst of his career as a teacher and educator in the field of gifted education, Tracy renewed his passion for writing and performing and began to play at open mics in the Central Texas area.
When he discovered the dojo, he truly found his musical voice and redoubled his efforts to improve his skills as a player and craft as a writer.
While developing as a solo performer, Tracy also played in several bands, including Three for a Dollar, The Funsters, and Three Way Street.
He has played at many venues in the area, including the Cactus Cafe, NeWorlDeli, Patsy’s Cowgirl Café, Whip In, Oma Gruene’s Secret Garden, the Triple Crown, and Cheatham Street Warehouse.
He has released two CDs of almost all original songs, combining clever and thoughtful lyrics with top-notch instrumental accompaniment.
His first recording, Mountains of Dreams, came out in 2012, and charted in the top 30 on the Folk DJ chart. Two songs from that album appear in the recent independent film, DisAssocationVille.
His newest recording is The Other Way Around, released in 2016.
Working with co-producer Tommy Byrd (Byrd and Street), The Other Way Around features well-known Austin performers Warren Hood (Warren Hood Band, The Waybacks) on mandolin and violin, clarinetist Stanley Smith (Asylum Street Spankers, Jazz Pharoahs), Chip Dolan on various keyboards, and many other talented local musicians.
