Hays County Commissioners Court Proclaims

Day of Peace in Support of Gary Job Corps Anti-violence Initiative:

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court joined with Gary Job Corps to proclaim September 21 as the International Day of Peace in Hays County and invited citizens to join a peace march hosted by students from Gary Job Corps Center that morning. United Nations Resolutions 36/37 established the international Day of Peace in 1981 and it continues to be celebrated around the world.

The march coincides with the Youth 2 Youth (Y2Y) mission to promote anti-violence initiatives both at and away from Job Corps centers. Job Corps students started Y2Y in 2015 to provide a format to talk about violence and aggression in the communities, to empower one another to prevent violence and aggression and to share their stories and discuss solutions. It is the first national, student-created-and-led effort to curb youth violence.

The Court praised Gary Job Center students for their initiative and also thanked the administrators and staff of the center for the training programs they provide for 16-to-24-year-old men and women. Two students in the machining program presented County Judge Bert Cobb, M.D., with two gavels made in their classes.
