UPDATED 4:59 PM TUES: Vie Management Releases Update Regarding Vie Lofts Evacuation, Safety Concerns

Staff Reports

UPDATED: On Tuesday, the co-founder of Vie Management released another update regarding Vie Lofts.

Last night we had a meeting with leadership from the City of San Marcos. Based on that conversation, the city officials and their engineers that were present, have verbally confirmed what our previous findings were, that there is no question about the structural integrity of the building.

The City of San Marcos fire department requested a new safety evacuation plan from a licensed architect in the State of Texas, which we are working on now.

Our plan is to have this to the City by tomorrow morning for approval. They indicated that they would have this back to us within 24 hours. Upon approval, we will be able to give our residents a date/time when they can move back home.

In addition, we are working on a plan to address the concerns from the City of San Marcos about the stairwell (there are three stairwells in the building) and a door frame both of which need to be repaired.

As stated previously, these two concerns do not have a direct connection/impact with the structural integrity of the building.

Thank you for your patience as we work through this situation with the City of San Marcos.

On Friday, the City of San Marcos issued a mandatory evacuation for the Vie Lofts at San Marcos’s 162 residents due to safety concerns.

Derrick Milam, the founder of Vie Management, released a statement Friday regarding the evacuation and stated the safety of their residents was most important.

Milam said he and other management representatives would be at city hall when the doors opened Monday to meet with city staff and officials to address the safety concerns.

“Our goal is to understand why they expressed safety issues, fix anything they say isn’t safe immediately and have all residents back into their homes as soon as possible,” Milam said Saturday.

In an updated statement Monday evening, Milam said the company had been meeting with multiple individuals from the City of San Marcos.

“Independently, we also had an additional engineer on-site to inspect the building,” Milam said. “The findings thus far have been consistent with our initial reports and inspections that there is no question about the structural integrity of the building.”

According to Via Management, the City of San Marcos fire department did express an initial concern with one of the three stairwells in the building, and a door frame both of which need to be repaired.

“These two concerns do not have a direct connection/impact with the structural integrity of the building,” Milam said. “While we complete the repairs, the city has requested a new safety evacuation plan. The city has assured us they will provide feedback within 24 hours of receiving the plan. Our goal is to have that new plan submitted to the city by the end of the day on Wednesday and once submitted to the city, we are hopeful that we will be able to quickly facilitate returning students to their home.”
