San Marcos, TX – From free local art shows and access to one of the best holiday displays in downtown San Marcos to affordably priced special holiday performances and pop-up holiday gift art markets, the Price Center has many of your holiday season shopping and entertainment needs covered.
The Center’s unique take on the season begins with a community art show and sale featuring the works of more than 20 local artists focused on Fall & Winter Holiday Traditions from Around the World on display daily in the Center’s Tea Room now through early January.
Decorations abound inside and out for tours, selfies, family photos, and lots of holiday cheer and inspiration each day from 9 AM to 5 PM. Guests arrive to an outdoor “lighted river” flowing from the front stairs of the former church sanctuary to the Mermaid sculpture in the Garden.
Inside, a variety of Christmas trees – traditional and non, handmade ornaments, wonderful and imaginative floral displays, and unique mini-collections offer a delightfully merry and visual treat for all.
Of particular interest this year is the Asian-inspired Christmas tree, centerpieces and table-scapes featuring nearly 400 origami paper cranes in the Tea Room and the mini reindeer and tree collections in glass cabinets in the Main Parlor and 1893 Chapel.
Dianne Wassenich, Diane McMahon, Lynda Thorton and volunteers from the San Marcos River Foundation are the creative force behind the Center’s holiday displays each year.
In addition, Bee Friends has brought in another wonderful display of holiday inspired quilts as well as their annual People’s Choice Christmas Stocking Contest in the Stairwell Gallery. (Visitors can vote for their favorite as often as they like now through Dec. 13.)
For affordable family entertainment, on Sun., Dec. 2 at 7:30 PM “A Zany Merry Christmas,” brings some of Black Diamond Theater’s best and brightest for a fast-paced and fun holiday Cabaret. Info & Tickets ($15) available @ blackdiamondshows.com and at the door.
On Sat. & Sun., Dec. 15 & 16 at 7:30 PM and 2:30 PM respectively, “A Lone Star Christmas Carol” provides a twist on the Dickens classic via bluegrass, swing, Western, country, and even a little jazzy blues in a funny and poignant Texas-style retelling. Tickets are $12 Adults; $10 Seniors & Young People ($2 extra @ the door).
The last of the public holiday events at the Center is Thur., Dec. 20, when the house comes alive for the Third Thursday Downtown Walkabout from 6-9 PM.
Live music, Christmas karaoke-style sing-along, pop-up vendors for last minute shopping, refreshments and lots of holiday cheer will be featured. Free, open to all.
