Rep. Zwiener Joins House Democratic Caucus To Reiterate Call For Special Session On Gun Violence

Kyle, TX — State Representative Erin Zwiener spoke alongside her Central Texas colleagues at a House Democratic Caucus press conference today in which they urged Governor Abbott to call a special session to address the gun violence epidemic.

In the span of one month, there have been two mass shootings in Texas-El Paso and Midland/Odessa claiming nearly 30 lives.

“I refuse to accept it as normal that we lose dozens of people every year in Texas to these incidents of mass public hate,” said Rep. Zwiener. “I hope that the rest of my colleagues not here today, as well as the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, will also refuse to accept this as normal.”

Of the Central Texas members present at the press conference, Rep. Zwiener represents the most rural district. A gun owner herself, she understands the responsibility that comes with owning and carrying a weapon.

Rep. Zwiener spent three months traveling the Continental Divide Trail and carried a revolver for protection. Like Rep. Zwiener, most gun owners support common-sense gun protections including closing the background check loopholes and implementing extreme-risk protections orders.

“I want to call on my fellow colleagues and the Governor to be courageous. To not be held hostage by the opinion of a small minority. To do what the people of Texas are asking us to do, which is to protect our children and families,” said Rep. Zwiener. “We can move forward on this and have the support of the majority of Texans and gun owners in the process.”
