Texas State Men’s Basketball Hits The Road To Face Houston Baptist

Saturday, Dec. 2, will the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs with Texas State leading the series 2-1.

San Marcos, TexasThe Texas State men’s basketball hits the road for the first time this month when it travels to take on Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Sharp Gym. It will be the first of six road contests this month for the Bobcats.

Entering the game, TXST is 4-3 on the season having won four of its last five contests. The Huskies are 2-5 and are coming off a 30-point win over Dallas Christian on Tuesday.

Bill Culhane will have the call on the radio with the game being broadcast on 1300 AM The Zone out of Austin and KTSW 89.9 FM out of San Marcos. Pacing the Bobcats in scoring (14.3) and rebounding (7.3) is Nijal Pearson. The sophomore has made 40.9 percent of his shots and connected on 15 three-point attempts. He is also second on the team with six steals and five blocks.

Averaging just under 10 points a game is Tyler Blount at 9.9. He has made a team-high 51.5 percent of his three-point attempts with 17 makes. Overall, the Virginian is shooting 50.0 percent from the field.

Immanuel King is putting up 9.7 points per game with a team-high 68.6 field goal percentage. The senior enters the game grabbing 5.4 rebounds per game and has blocked a team best six shots.

Coming off a near triple-double performance on Wednesday, Alex Peacock is averaging 8.7 ppg, 6.6 rpg and 1.6 steals per game. He has made 18-of-32 (56.3%) of his shot attempts and has made a team-high 88.0 percent of his free throws. He is also dishing out 3.0 assists per game, the second most on the team behind Marlin Davis’ 3.9.

Eric Terry adds 7.7 ppg and 2.6 rpg coming off the bench and backing up King.

Scouting Houston Baptist

Houston Baptist’s victories this season have come against non-Division I opposition. The Huskies’ five losses have come on the road against Belmont, Detroit Mercy, Oklahoma State, Providence and Virginia Tech. In the Southland Conference’s preseason poll, HBU was picked to finish ninth in the 13-team league after a 17-14 season last year in which the program played in the CIT.

The main offensive threat for the Huskies is Josh Ibarra. The 6-foot, 11-inch center leads the team with 17.0 ppg, 9.3 rpg, a 56.8 field goal percentage and eight blocks. He has recorded three double-doubles on the year and netted a season-high 31 points against the Titans. However, Ibarra struggles at the free throw line having made 18-of-34 (52.9%).

David Caraher contributes 13.6 ppg with a 47.9 shooting percentage. He has made 14 three-pointers and is shooting 38.9 percent from beyond the arc. The freshman from North Carolina is also second on the squad with 5.1 rpg.

The third player on the team with a double-digit scoring average is Ian DuBose at 13.0 per contest. The freshman has made 40.6 percent from the field and is 9-for-27 on three-point attempts. He is handing out 2.0 apg and been credited with 13 steals.

Just shy of putting up double-digit points per game is Braxton Bonds (9.9). The point guard leads the team with 5.3 apg and 18 steals.

Coming off the bench, Jalon Gates is scoring 9.7 ppg in only 13.4 minutes per game. He has connected on a team best 17 treys and is shooting 38.6 percent from long distance.

HBU is scoring 86.1 ppg but surrenders 89.4 per contest. The Huskies do grab 40.3 rpg and have a +2.4 rebounding margin. They also force 15.6 turnovers per game with 7.4 being the result of a steal.

Saturday, Dec. 2, will the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs with Texas State leading the series 2-1. The last time the teams met was Dec. 3, 2011 in Strahan Coliseum with the Bobcats winning 103-76. HBU’s win was the only time that the teams have met in Houston on Dec. 4, 2010 with the final score being 88-81.
