San Marcos Fire Department To Host “Not Every Hero Wears A Cape” Open House

In honor of Fire Prevention Week, the City of San Marcos Fire Department (SMFD) will host its annual Open House on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Station #5, 100 Carlson Circle. The public is invited to attend this free event.

This year’s campaign “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” highlights the importance of a timely and safe fire escape plan.

“Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go,” said Chief Les Stephens. “No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately.”

Here are some essentials to making a plan:

  • Map Out your home, and the exits for each room.
  • Mark the locations of all the Smoke Alarms, and make sure they are working.
  • Create a Meeting Place Outside where everyone can meet upon exiting.
  • Make sure everyone knows how to dial 911.

Local groups including the San Marcos Police Department, the Interlocal Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, Hays County and San Marcos Animal Services, San Marcos/Hays County EMS, and Pink Heals will host tables at the event.

Attendees can experience fire truck rides, a fire-safety clown show, Hays Unmanned Robotics Team demonstrations, big rescue trucks and many more fun, educational activities. Free hotdogs, chips, drinks and cookies will be provided by Sam’s Club, the event sponsor.
