February Sales Tax Allocations For Central Texas Cities, Hays County Better Than Last Month
February sales tax revenue in Central Texas and Hays County had a better January than December.
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced yesterday, he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $912 million in local sales tax allocations for February, 6.2 percent more than in January 2017.
Businesses have to report monthly, quarterly or yearly. February’s allocations are based on tax receipts for businesses reporting for December, 4th Quarter and Yearly.
This month’s sales tax allocations are from purchases made either monthly, quarterly or yearly. Americans do the most of their spending during the holiday season and in turn, would make February’s sales tax allocations higher than other months.
The majority of retailers around the country either break even or make the majority of their yearly profits during the holiday season in the last quarter of the year.
However, the state, counties and municipalities don’t receive those dollars for five to six weeks after the end of the month paid.
San Marcos had a higher monthly percent change for February than last month. However, the City of San Marcos ended 2017 with a -2.95 percent deficit over 2016 (year over year).
Additionally, the City of San Marcos is carrying an overall total debt of $389,029,050 as of August 31, 2016, and has higher property tax rates than the City of Austin. Source: State of Texas Comptroller – Read more HERE.
In 2017, the City of San Marcos received a total of $27,860,431.05 in sales tax revenue, and in 2016, they received $28,707,576.37. (The state’s comptroller’s office runs sales tax allocations on a January – December year.)
