SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State men’s basketball team, playing the fifth game in 11 days, dropped a tight one to ULM, 62-59 at Strahan Coliseum.

The Bobcats could never quite get in gear in the first half as ULM raced out to a 26-12 lead with 4:28 to go following Marvin Williams’ layup. Williams finished the game 9-of-9 for the Warhawks, for a game-high 18 points.

Victor Bermudez tried to spark some life into the team, pouring in five points, as the team closed the gap to 31-21 at halftime.

The second half was a different story, with Texas State coming out of half on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to six. After ULM tried to stretch its lead again, the Bobcats went on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 42-42 with 9:11 to go. It was the first tie of the game, and would begin a back-and-forth affair for the final nine minutes, which saw five ties.

Ethan Montalvo and Cameron Naylor keyed the run that tied the game, scoring seven of the team’s 11 points during the span. Naylor first hit a 15-foot jumper and followed it with a block at the other end on defense, resulting in a circus layup, making the deficit five. Montalvo’s contribution was a step back three-pointer.

The two teams traded buckets for the rest of the way and with 2:12 to go, Texas State tried to make another push. Down 57-52, Wes Davis had one of his game-high seven steals and went down the other end to drain a three-pointer, cutting it to 57-55.

The Bobcats had a chance to tie with 14 seconds to go as the team got a stop on defense and Montalvo led the team in transition and found Naylor underneath the basket, but Naylor was unable to convert.

Following a ULM turnover with 2.7 seconds to go, the team had one final gasp, but Davis’ inbounds pass was stolen by Majok Deng, appearing to ice the game. However, Deng only made one free throw and D.J. Brown had a near full-court heave to tie it at the buzzer, but it hit the rim, sealing the game for the Warhawks.

The Bobcats will wrap up their current three-game home stand on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., when it hosts South Alabama. Thursday’s game will be broadcast on 89.9 FM KTSW and online at www.txstatebocats.com/radio.
