Buda City Council Approves Resolution To adopt Hays County Hazard Mitigation Plan

The City of Buda now has an updated FEMA approved Hazard Mitigation Plan. The Buda City Council recently approved a resolution to adopt the updated Hays County Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The original Hays County Hazard Mitigation Plan was adopted in 2006 and then updated in 2011. The plan was developed to increase awareness of the threat that natural hazards, especially floods, pose to the County and its residents.
In January of 2017, the City of Buda asked for the public’s input regarding these threats in the form of a public survey. The results of the survey helped Hays County identify and prioritize actions to reduce the risk and losses associated with natural hazards (tornadoes, wildfires, floods).
Participating communities in the 2018 Hays County Mitigation Plan Update include: Village of Bear Creek, City of Kyle, City of Buda, City of San Marcos, City of Woodcreek, City of Hays, City of Dripping Springs, City of Mountain City, City of Uhland, Hays County, City of Niederwald, and City of Wimberley. The plan was drafted after numerous workshops and community surveys.
The top three ranked hazards among all communities were floods, wildfires, and drought.
Having a good Hazard Mitigation Plan reduces loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. It is most effective when implemented under a comprehensive, long-term mitigation plan. State, tribal, and local governments engage in hazard mitigation planning to identify risks and vulnerabilities associated with natural disasters, and to develop long-term strategies for protecting people and property from future hazard events.
Without a Hazard Mitigation Plan, the City of Buda would not be eligible for federal assistance that may be available after a hazard occurs.
