SMCISD Battle Of The Books One For The Record Books

There were serious nail-biting moments in Friday’s Battle of the Books, as teams from each San Marcos CISD elementary school competed for the coveted trophy. After almost two hours and five tie-breaking questions, it came down to contested answers for question number six: what was a plague of the Dust Bowl that devoured crops, clothing, and even shovel handles? Team Travis said “locusts,” and Team Hernandez said “grasshoppers.”

An impartial team of judges found the source book, and turned to the critical page that they displayed on the overhead projector for the room full of supporters who were all holding their breaths: “grasshoppers.”

A jubilant Hernandez Team posed for pictures with the trophy which will be inscribed with their names, but not before students on all the teams went around the room shaking hands with their former competitors, complimenting them on their good performances.

This year’s competition was held at the San Marcos Activity Center on May 13. Campus-level competitions were held earlier to determine which students would be on the Battle of the Books teams.
