City Of Austin Recruiting Volunteers To Role-Play For Airport Emergency Plan Exercise

The City is recruiting 150 public volunteers, ages 18 and older, to act in various roles in order to train emergency responders how to realistically respond to and mitigate an aircraft incident.

The City of Austin, in cooperation with its regional partners, is conducting a full scale exercise demonstrating proper planning of its Airport Emergency Plan.

The City is recruiting 150 public volunteers, ages 18 and older, to act in various roles in order to train emergency responders how to realistically respond to and mitigate an aircraft incident.

The exercise takes place from 8 a.m. to Noon, on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA). Volunteer applications will be accepted through Friday, March 31, 2017.

All volunteers should plan to be onsite at 7:30 a.m., and have availability through the afternoon. Free parking will be available. Detailed instructions will be emailed to accepted volunteers 72 hours prior to the event.

Approved volunteers will be selected to play the role of:

  • An injured or distressed passenger
  • An uninjured passenger
  • A family member or friend of a passenger who may be on an aircraft that was involved in an accident

The level of “injuries” assigned will range from severe to minor and may require some acting ability. Some volunteers may be selected to receive fake injuries applied via latex or makeup from trained personnel.

About the 2017 ABIA Full Scale Exercise: Every three years, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is required to conduct a full scale exercise of its Airport Emergency Plan. Only local agencies will be involved in this exercise.
