The City of San Marcos encourages the community to join cyclists from coast to coast and participate in Bike to Work Day, Fri., May 18 as part of National Bike Month.

Established in 1956 by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month is celebrated annually in May. Most trips Americans make in their daily life are short – usually less than 3 miles – allowing the opportunity to easily take these trips by bicycle.

This month provides the opportunity to celebrate bicycling and rediscover the many reasons to ride. Whether you bike to work or school; ride to save money or time; pump those pedals to preserve your health or the environment; cruise to explore your community, or you just don’t want to bother with parking, riding your bike has many benefits.

“Commuting with bikes improves our community by decreasing traffic congestion and reducing air pollution,” said Amanda Hernandez, Development Services Manager and local bike enthusiast. “People on bikes arrive at work in better health, are more alert and have more energy. It’s a great way to travel.”

If you’re not able to ride on Friday, the entire month of May is Bike Month, so you still have plenty of time to participate! Find the best routes around San Marcos by viewing our bike map at SMTX Bike Map.

Residents can also share their bike experiences by uploading a photo to social media using the hashtags #WhyIRide #BikeMonth #SMTXBikeMonth.
