Hays County Sheriff Deputy Wounded During Fatal Shooting In Wimberley

On November 24, 2017 at approximately 3:47 am, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call of a man with a gun who was possibly breaking into Jean’s Antiques, an antique store located at the 11500 block of Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley, Texas.
Several deputies arrived in the area and while attempting to locate the male subject, someone began shooting at them, striking their patrol vehicles and wounding one of the deputies. The deputies fired back and the suspect retreated into a nearby wooded area.
The suspect, identified as Rocky Miles West, White male and 26 years of age from Wimberley, Texas was located after a brief search and found deceased. It is unknown if West’s wounds were self- inflicted or if his injuries were the result of the shots that were fired by the sheriff’s deputies.
The injured deputy is identified as Benjamin Gieselman, 28 years of age and is a three year veteran with the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.
Gieselman suffered non-life threatening injuries to his legs and upper body, however he was flown to an Austin area hospital where he is being treated. No injuries were reported to the other deputies involved.
West had an extensive criminal history and his last arrest was in January of 2017 for a family violence charge of assault with bodily injury.
The Hays County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division as well as the Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers Office is conducting the investigation. Further information will be released as they become available.
