Third Sun Belt Defense Player Of The Week Award For Martin

For Martin, it is the second straight year that she has received the Sun Belt’s weekly honor three times. She became the first player in conference history to accomplish the feat.

NEW ORLEANS – After another standout performance between the posts this past weekend as the Texas State soccer team claimed its first-ever Sun Belt Conference regular season championship, Heather Martin was selected as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.

For Martin, it is the second straight year that she has received the Sun Belt’s weekly honor three times. She became the first player in conference history to accomplish the feat.

This past weekend saw Martin make a combined 13 saves in the two matches. She made six stops in a 1-1 draw on Friday night against Georgia State. She followed up with a seven-save performance in the trophy claiming 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon.

The shutout was her seventh of the season and 13th in her career to tie her with Caitlyn Rinehart (2012-15) for third in program history.

Martin’s victory was also the 10th of the season for her in goal. It is the eighth time that a TXST goalie has reached double-digit wins in a campaign. The Midlothian, Texas native concluded the regular season with 24 career wins and is one shy of matching Rinehart for second place.

Following this weekend’s contests, Martin is fifth in the nation in save percentage (.917), 15th in goals against average (.495), 36th in shutouts and 79th in saves (77). Her save total is tied for the sixth most ever by a Bobcat with Natalie Gardini (2013).

Texas State faces Troy in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The time for the match and the rest of the bracket will be announced following the conclusion of Little Rock and Appalachian State that takes place in Boone, North Carolina at 12 p.m. CDT.
