Texas State Hosts Screening, Q&A Of Documentary ‘A Deeper Side’

SAN MARCOS – Texas State University will host a screening and question-and-answer session of the feature-length documentary, “A Deeper Side,” 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 9 at the Alkek Teaching Theater.

The event is free and open to the public.

Shot in a naturalistic style without a traditional script or narration, “A Deeper Side” tells a personal story about gifted artist, musician and rapper, David Francis Drymala.

Often speaking directly to the audience through his personal computer or camera, Drymala gives the viewer a unique glimpse into his world of schizophrenia and addiction. His art, music and poetry also illustrate his inspired but painful journey.

Filmed over five years, the audience witnesses Drymala’s attempts to establish himself as an artist and rapper while trying to cope with the demands of daily life.

He is seen working on his art, performing his music, advocating for mental health awareness and struggling to manage his own personal demons at the same time.

In attendance will be members of the Drymala family who appear in the film, producer/director Ed Scholwinski of the Department of Counseling,

Leadership, Adult Education and School Psychology at Texas State, and Shane Scholwinski, associate producer, film editor and Texas State graduate.

The screening is sponsored by the Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education and School Psychology, the Department of Psychology, the Association of School Psychology Students and the Counseling Center.
