Traffic Alert: I-35 Main Lane Closure Between Rittiman Road And George Beach This Weekend

The highway will reopen briefly Saturday between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. to accommodate traffic headed to the San Antonio Spurs’ home game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

SAN ANTONIO  – All main lanes of Interstate 35 will close between Rittiman Road and George Beach in San Antonio 9 p.m. Friday, April 7, until 5 a.m. Monday, April 10.

The highway will reopen briefly Saturday between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. to accommodate traffic headed to the San Antonio Spurs’ home game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The closure area is near mile marker 164 near San Antonio Military Medical Center just northeast of downtown San Antonio. Southbound traffic will exit George Beach, follow the frontage road and re-enter the highway.

Northbound traffic will exit George Beach, follow the frontage road to southbound I-410, turn around at Binz-Engleman and re-enter I-35 from I-410.

A virtual tour of the closure and detour is available via YouTube.

Traffic wishing to avoid the closure altogether may use Loop 1604 and either I-10 or U.S. Hwy 281 to do so. Hazardous material and oversized load routes should continue to be followed as permitted.

The closure allows for overhead bridge work related to ongoing expansion of I-35 between George Beach and Randolph Boulevard.

That $74.5 million project adds a lane in each direction of I-35 and rearranges a number of entrance and exit ramps. Work is scheduled to wrap up by the end of 2017.
