TWDB To Help Finance Lake Dunlap Spill Gate Repairs After 2019 Failure

To address the spill gate failure of the Lake Dunlap dam that led to the draining of the lake in 2019, the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA) secured $40 million in financing from the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) on December 3.

GBRA will use the assistance to replace spill gates at the Lake Dunlap dam that have reached the end of their useful life.

Improvements include structural modifications to the existing spillway structure, upgrades to the mechanical system and electrical power, improved backup power, new instrumentation and controls, and other updates.

The authority entered into a contract with the Lake Dunlap Water Control and Improvement District formed in 2020 to rehabilitate and maintain the dam.

The design phase began on December 1 on the project. Construction is scheduled to begin February 1, 2021, and conclude in August 2023.
