SMCISD, Hays CISD Announce Aid Efforts For Hurricane Harvey Victims
Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coastal region on Aug. 25 and held the state hostage for several days resulting in over 40 inches of rain in areas like Houston.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, school districts around the state have begun efforts to help districts along the coast.
On Aug. 31st, San Marcos Consolidated Independent School district announced they were adopting Calhoun County Independent School District.
The district said Superintendent Michael Cardona spoke with Calhoun County ISD Superintendent James Crowley on Aug. 30.
“Mr. Crowley mentioned that most of their students, teachers and all employees had lost everything,” the district said. “We’re hoping that we can join forces to assist that community in getting back on their feet.”
The district is hosting a donation drive to help collect clothing, shoes, school supplies, gift cards, diapers/baby wipes, formula, hygiene products and much more. Donations can be dropped off at the Central Office located at 501 S LBJ Drive.
Hays Consolidated Independent School District has also announced efforts to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
Girl Scout Troop 2369 is collecting diapers (adult and child), baby formula, canned goods and canned cat and dog food at Carpenter Hill Elementary School. Donations can be dropped off in the CHES front foyer through Sept. 15.
CHES has partnered with Sylvan Learning and is collecting donations for the Hays County Food Bank through Sept. 15 as well.
Hays CISD has four different opportunities for aid efforts posted on their Hays Helping Our Neighbors page including the two CHES drives.
Efforts to help victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana are ongoing and are likely to increase as communities begin to rebuild.
