Wimberley ISD Student’s Patriotic Essay Places First In District

Wimberley, Texas, — Yearly, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen Essay contest offers an exciting opportunity for junior high students to share their patriotism, with winners receiving cash rewards.

Every year Wimberley ISD students respond in impressive form.

This year, the second place winner, Danforth Junior High School seventh grader, Ella Malone, also won first place in District 5 competition and placed in the top 24 among more than 5,600 entries throughout Texas.

Along with Wimberley, District 5 is comprised of students from San Marcos, Kyle, New Braunfels, Buda, Canyon Lake and McQueeney. The topic this year was “Why I honor the American Flag.”

“We were just blown away by the great participation from Danforth Junior High students and of course, the quality of their essays was equally as amazing. To have a local student rank first among all the other participants makes us all very proud,” said Kerry Ridgway, VFW Post 6441 Patriot’s Pen Coordinator.Malone earned a $200 award from the local VFW, $500 for her first place in the district competition and $100 from the state.

“We have never had a junior high student go this far in this essay competition, and she still has six more years to enter the annual competition,” said Ridgway.
