Work To Begin On Cheatham Street Waterline In San Marcos

The construction will include boring under the San Marcos River to connect to an existing main on the east side of the river.

City contractors will begin work on a water main project along Cheatham Street, April 23, that will involve boring under the San Marcos River and detouring traffic on Cheatham Street and Riverside Drive until just before Memorial Day.

During the first phase of the work, the intersection of Cheatham will be reduced to one-way traffic eastbound with access allowed to Reynolds Street. Flaggers will control traffic at the intersection during daytime hours. Traffic along Riverside Dr. will be detoured to the IH-35 frontage road to the south and CM Allen Parkway.

The City has contracted with Santa Clara Construction of Austin for the project, which will replace a 6-inch water line with a 12-inch water line along Cheatham Street between CM Allen Parkway and an area near Riverside Drive. This project will replace deteriorating mains, increase system reliability and improve water system pressure for residents in the area.

The construction will include boring under the San Marcos River to connect to an existing main on the east side of the river. Protective barriers will be in place during the boring operations, and the work will have no adverse affect on the river or banks.

The second phase of construction will allow for two-way traffic on Cheatham Street with flagging operations during daytime hours.

Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, April 23. The first phase will be complete by Memorial Day in time for the Lions Club Tube Rental opening. The full project should be complete within three months, weather permitting.
