Mayor Hughson Proclaims Air Quality Awareness Week In San Marcos

Staff Reports

On Monday, April 15, Mayor Jane Hughson proclaimed April 29 to May 3 as Air Quality Awareness Week in San Marcos at the city’s Proclamations presentation at the San Marcos City Hall Council Chambers.

The mayor called upon all residents to educate themselves about the importance of air quality and promote awareness of it within our community.

San Marcos is a member of the Central Texas Clean Air Coalition of the Capital Area Council of Governments (CAPCOG) and supports the Coalition’s effort to promote regional air quality.

Air pollution levels in the CAPCOG region are at risk of violating federal health-based standards by the end of 2019, and while air quality is improving in Central Texas, regional air pollution levels were considered “moderate” or worse on more than 30% of days in 2018, according to the National Air Quality Index.

According to the city,  children, older adults, people with lung disease, and people with heart disease make up about two out of every five residents of Central Texas and are particularly affected by poor air quality.

The City of San Marcos supports public awareness about both the quality of local and regional air quality, and steps that members of our community can take to reduce their exposure to air exposure to air pollution and to reduce the emissions that contribute to poor air quality in the region.
