City Of San Marcos, Texas State Coordinate Leaf Collection For Compost

The City of San Marcos Resource Recovery program and Texas State University’s Bobcat Blend Composting are collecting leaves to recycle into compost from Oct. 24 to Nov. 15 at the parking lot of the Grant Harris Building at 401 E. Hopkins.

“When leaves are sent to landfills, they’re often buried without enough oxygen to decompose, so they release the greenhouse gas methane,” said Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager Amy Kirwin. “This collection helps to reduce the City’s output of methane while also improving the research and development capability of Bobcat Blend’s composting program.”

Leaves and grass clippings can be brought in plastic or paper bags and then deposited in the caged trailer. Leaves should be free of trash or other non-biodegradable materials.

Large branches should not be included since the program does not have the means to grind up large branches. The leaves will be used by the program to make compost for University projects.
