Hays CISD Confirms Campus Connection With COVID-19 Patient

Hays Consolidated Independent School District officials were notified Wednesday morning that an adult, who was on campus on March 11, has developed symptoms of fever and tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the Hays County Local Health Department, the patient was asymptomatic at the time of their visit to the school’s campus, and the risk of transmission is low for those on campus.

Hays CISD sent an email to Tobias Elementary parents, staff, and faculty Wednesday to notify them of the situation; the letter states the school will be completely closed until further notice and disinfected with special cleaning supplies before anyone is allowed to return.

The Hays County Health Department is only advising Tobias staff, faculty, and parents to monitor themselves and students for symptoms until March 25 at this time.  

Symptoms to watch out for are:

• Fever
• Cough
• Shortness of breath

Those who develop the above symptoms should isolate themselves from others and call their primary care provider or the health department. 

Medical attention should be sought immediately if an individual develops emergency warning signs, such as:

• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
• persistent pain and pressure in the chest
• new confusion or inability to arouse
• bluish lips or face

The CDC provides guidance regarding symptoms to look for and what to do if an individual does have symptoms.

The CDC and health department stress that most people who develop symptoms do not need to seek medical attention and can be cared for at home.
