by, Joshua Flanagan

SAN MARCOS – Texas State used timely hitting on Saturday’s Senior Day and strong pitching to secure the series against Georgia State with a 10-1 victory over the Panthers to improve to 26-22 on the season and 13-10 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Bobcats saw seniors Tanner Hill, Cory Geisler and Chase Hodson step up in a big way after Hill, Geisler, Lucas Humpal and Pasquale Mazzoccoli contributed in Friday’s victory. Texas State will look for the sweep at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Texas State’s timely hitting early hurt Georgia State. In both the first and third innings, the Bobcats scored two runs each inning with two outs. First, Tanner Hill kept the inning alive and Ryan Newman brought him home with his seventh homer of the year. Then, Cory Geisler kept the third inning alive with a two-out single that Hill followed with a double. Newman plated both of them with another two-out, two-RBI hit.

With a 4-1 lead, the Bobcats continued to lean on Georgia State, adding a run in the fourth off a Luke Sherley double and pummeling the Panthers with a five-run eighth inning.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Hennigan struck out eight, the most he’s had since March 28 at Sam Houston State. He only gave up four hits and one earned run for his fourth win of the season. Chase Hodson struck out five with just one walk and two hits given up in four innings to earn his third save of the season.

Paul, playing right field Saturday, put together a 3-for-4 day, scoring twice and knocking in an RBI. After striking out in the second inning, Paul was not retired again, striking two singles and a double. In right field, he also showed out defensively, registering four putouts, the most of any outfielder on the day and the third most in the game behind just the catcher and first baseman.

Chase Hodson / RHP / Senior / Richmond, Texas

Hodson entered the game in the sixth inning and quickly struck two out to finish the inning. He retired five straight to start the appearance and six of the first seven batters he faced.
