Library To Host Summer Reading Program Beginning With “Big Rigs” Kickoff Party

How high would a stack of 50,000 books stand tall?

That’s how many picture books the San Marcos Library checked out last summer, providing critical reading and literacy opportunities – helping some children get ready for Kindergarten and others avoid the “summer slide” of academic confidence.

The library’s Summer Reading Program kicks off with a “Big Rigs” party Wednesday, June 7 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Get a close-up look at big trucks such as a road grader; a semi-trailer truck; San Marcos fire trucks, SWAT vehicle and police cars; a San Marcos/Hays County EMS ambulance; an Army Reserve military vehicle; a Texas Disposal Systems recycling truck; many of the city’s public works department vehicles; a SMEU bucket truck; buses from SMCISD CARTS, and Texas State University; and a helicopter!

Children can hop aboard, imagine their future careers, and get started with their summer reading goal to help “Build a Better World.”

Lots of crafts and activities for children will be available in the library in addition to the outdoor display. Be sure to pick up a reading log, check out books, and prepare for a summer of fun!

The library’s Summer Reading Program will run from June 7 to Aug. 14 and will help children maintain or improve their reading comprehension skills.

Last summer, the library hosted 146 family events, including an awesome kick-off, followed by 40 storytimes, 16 puppet shows, 10 arts and crafts days, over 60 events for tweens and teens, and 14 visits to the Parks Summer Fun program – accumulating attendance of over 11,000 people and making reading a vital part of summer.

The San Marcos Public Library is located at 625 E. Hopkins St. Overflow parking for this event will be at the Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins St. and the Dog Park, 250 Charles Austin Dr.
