Hays CISD Partnering With YMCA-Austin’s Development ‘Camp Cypress’ To Receive New Aquatic Center

The YMCA-Austin planning to build “Camp Cypress,” and Hays CISD could partner to build a new Aquatics Complex.

The YMCA-Austin is planning to build “Camp Cypress,” and Hays CISD could partner to build a new Aquatics Complex.

According to information from YMCA-Austin, they would like to development Camp Cypress “to create a natural oasis for kids and families who need nature the most. With a model that combines outdoor education, day, overnight, and family camping with group retreat and meeting facilities, we will create a sustainable model that will yield benefits for generations to come.”

The new camp could include a new partnership between the two entities to build the new aquatic center, Camp Cypress would offer a dining hall, water tower and “Treehouse Cabins,” and would include the following features;

  • Cabin Accommodations (for 250)
  • Amphitheater (seats 450)
  • Camp Lodge and STEM Learning Lab/Classroom Space
  • Outdoor Art Pavilions (3)
  • Covered Airnasium
  • Large parking lot
  • 5.5 Miles of Hiking Trails (1/2 mi. shorefront along Onion Creek)
  • Garden & Livestock Corral
  • 35 Ft. Climbing Tower
  • Low Ropes Course
  • Archery
  • Two 600 ft. Zip Lines

The District would contribute an amount not to exceed $5M, with a 30 year lease to use the 10 lane competitive pool & locker rooms, and the YMCA would assume all O&M (operations & maintenance) for duration of the lease, and Hays CISD would have the use of camp amenities (as agreed upon).

The YMCA is estimating a move-in date for the aquatic center for Hays CISD of August 2018.
