TEA Fails Two Hays CISD Schools
The Texas Education Agency evaluates and rates Texas schools and school districts on their performance in four areas: student achievement, student progress, closing performance gaps and postsecondary reading level.
Two Hays Consolidated Independent School District campuses failed to meet state academic standards for the 2016-2017 school year.
The Texas Education Agency evaluates and rates Texas schools and school districts on their performance in four areas: student achievement, student progress, closing performance gaps and postsecondary reading level. In August 2018, districts will be rated on an A-F system, which will average three criteria.
Target scores for the categories are…
- Student Achievement = 60
- Student Progress = 32
- Closing Performance Gaps = 28
- Postsecondary Readiness = 12
Science Hall Elementary failed to meet standards in Student Achievement and Closing Performance Gaps. The school only received a performance mark of 55 in Student Achievement and a 26 in closing performance gaps.
Hemphill Elementary also failed to meet state standards for the second year in a row. The campus received a 44 out of 60 in Student Achievement, a 21 out of 28 in closing performance gaps and an 11 out of 12 in postsecondary readiness.
If a campus fails to meet state standards for five years in a row, the TEA may have the school closed. Ratings will allow school districts to evaluate strategies for improving performance and helping its schools and students succeed in the coming years.
Hays CISD’s school board has received the results of the TEA ratings and will have the opportunity to file for an appeal.
As for the rest of Hays CISD, all other campuses in the district received the “Met Standard” rating for the 2016-2017 school year.
The 2017 ratings can be changed if a school district, charter or campus appeal their score. Final results will be released in December. To explore the results of SMCISD’s campuses visit the TEA website.
