The Texas Department of Transportation will temporarily close north and southbound I-35 mainlanes beginning at 9 p.m. on Thursday evening, Feb. 15, so crews can safely install a new overhead sign bridge as part of the I-35 at 51st Street project.

The northbound I-35 upper deck will close at 15th Street at 9 p.m. and traffic will be diverted to the lower deck. Traffic on the lower deck will be reduced to one lane at 11 p.m. and will detour to the northbound frontage road at exit 237B (51st Street/Cameron Road) during full mainlane closures from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Drivers traveling on the northbound frontage road wishing to access I-35 mainlanes can re-enter at the entrance ramp near Barbara Jordan Boulevard.

Southbound I-35 will be reduced to one lane near US 290 East beginning at 9 p.m. Traffic will detour to the southbound frontage road at exit 237A (Airport Boulevard.) during full mainlane closures from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Drivers traveling on the southbound frontage road wishing to access I-35 mainlanes can re-enter at the entrance ramp near Airport Boulevard. (See attached detour map.)

East and westbound US 290 connections to southbound I-35 will close at 10 p.m. Drivers should use Cameron Road as an alternate route.

Road signs have been placed to alert drivers of the closure, and motorists should allow extra time to travel through this area. TxDOT asks the traveling public to be patient and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.

The I-35 at 51st Street project adds a southbound intersection bypass lane to allow through-traffic to bypass the traffic signal, reconfigures the entrance/exit ramps and realigns the southbound frontage road to add a new roundabout to improve traffic flow and safety. Bicycle and pedestrian enhancements are also being made within the project limits.

The $16.5 million project is partially funded by the city of Austin and Texas Clear Lanes. The contractor is Capital Excavation Company. The project is anticipated to be complete spring 2018, weather permitting. For more information about the I-35 and 51st Street project.
