LWV Sponsors Primary Candidates Debate Monday, February 8

A public debate for candidates in the upcoming Primary Election will be held Monday, February 8, 2016, at 6 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 East Hopkins Street, in San Marcos.

The Debate is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Hays County to increase voter education and participation.

Hays County Democratic and Republican candidates in the upcoming Primary Election have been invited to participate.  They include candidates for Sheriff, County Commissioner Pct. 3, Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Place 1 & 2, Constable Pct. 2 and Pct. 5, and Republican Party Chair.

Candidates in contested races will answer questions concerning their issues and qualifications for the office. Candidates in uncontested races will be introduced but will not debate.

The Debate will be video recorded and provided to all local news media. It will be available for viewing online a few days following the Debate.

League President Peggy Townes reminds the public that the League’s non-partisan stance is a vital principle of the League and will be evident in both the Debate and the Voters Guide.

Candidates for each office will be asked the same questions, with each having an equal opportunity to be the first to respond to a question. For fairness, time limits will be strictly enforced. Debate Moderator will be Kaylene Ray, an experienced League moderator.

At the Debate printed copies of both the LWV Hays County Voters Guide and the LWV Texas Voters Guide will be distributed.

The LWV Hays County Voters Guide lists county candidates and their answers to questions.

The LWV Texas Voters Guide lists State-wide and regional candidates for Railroad Commission, State Board of Education, and Justices of the Texas Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, and Court of Criminal Appeals. It is available at www.lwvtexas.org.

After the Debate 2000 additional printed copies of the LWV Hays County Voters Guides and the LWV Texas Voters Guides will be distributed throughout Hays County and will be available through online media. Printed Voters Guides are permitted to be taken into the Voting Booth.

Citizens can access information for other Primary candidates in several ways.

The Austin LWV Voters Guide covers District Court Judges, and U. S. Representative candidates, and can be found at www.lwvaustin.org. It will be inserted in the Austin American Statesman on February 14.

Vote 411 is the easiest way to find the many Voters Guide services offered by the LWV. Simply go to www.vote411.org and enter a specific address to get a customized sample ballot for that location, with candidate responses to LWV questions included for all races that appear on the ballot for that address.
