City Seeks Volunteers for Youth Commission

The City of San Marcos is seeking volunteers to serve on the San Marcos Youth Council, a new commission set forth in the Youth Master Plan of 2013.

The San Marcos City Council will select people from the pool of volunteers to appoint to the Youth Council in February.
The commission will meet monthly. Members of the commission will choose the day, place and time of their regular meetings and we hope to address barriers to attendance, such as transportation.

By city ordinance, the following educational entities have the opportunity to be represented by a high school or older aged student on the commission:

San Marcos High School student (4 positions)
San Marcos Academy student (1)
Private/Charter school student (1)
Home Schooled student (1)
Outside City Limits/Inside SMCISD Boundaries student (1)
Texas State University/Post-Secondary student (1)
Gary Job Corps student (1)
Phoenix Academy student (1)
Other At-Large Youth Members (4) For example, a person in the San Marcos city limits but attending Hays CISD, or another person from any categories above.

The commission’s charge includes the following:

Being the voice for youth for the greater San Marcos community
Advising and making recommendations to city council, school board and other elected officials and other policymakers about issues affecting youth
Serving as a “bridge” to support young people more effectively
Providing a structure for youth to become lifelong invested citizens
Providing outreach to San Marcos teens
Identifying youth issues that need community attention
Perform tasks and work on projects of the San Marcos Commission on Children.
The Youth Master Plan focuses on young people from birth through age 24 who live within the 210-square-mile geographic footprint of the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (SMCISD), which serves over 7,500 youth in Hays County and portions of neighboring Guadalupe and Caldwell counties. More information on the Youth Master Plan is posted online at www.sanmarcostx.gov/youthmasterplan.
