Bobcat Trio Earn Weekly Sun Belt Athletes Of The Week Honors

Next up for the trio and the rest of the Bobcats is the Next Mexico Team Invitational on Jan. 27 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

NEW ORLEANS – Senior Courtney Johnson, junior T’Mond Johnson and sophomore Devina Schneider were honored with the Sun Belt Conference Athletes of the Week awards after strong performances at the first two meets of the season. C. Johnson was named the women’s track and field honoree, T. Johnson earned the men’s track and field award and Schneider received the women’s track accolade.

  1. Johnson opened the indoor season by taking home the high jump title at the Purple Tiger Invitational with a clearance of 1.75m (5-8.75). She followed by finishing second at the Ted Nelson Invitational after getting over the high jump bar in 1.77m (5-9.75). Her jump in College Station, Texas tied her personal best, is tied for first in the SBC, matches the seventh best clearance in program history and ranks 19th in the nation.

Schneider competed for the first time this season at the Ted Nelson Invitation in the mile. She completed the race in 5:00.97 to finish second. Her time leads the Sun Belt by nearly five seconds and is the 10th quickest in school history.

  1. Johnson had two big weekends in the shot put for the Bobcats. The Killeen, Texas native recorded a toss of 18.50m (60-8.5) at the Purple Tiger Invitational to bring home the individual title. He followed this past Saturday by unleashing a toss of 18.95m (62-2.25) to place first at the Ted Nelson Invitational. His distance at Texas A&M is an indoor personal best, tops among all SBC competitors by nearly a foot, ranks second in TXST history and is currently the eighth farthest in the country.

It is the second weekly indoor award in T. Johnson’s career and the first for both C. Johnson and Schneider.
