Bobcats Net Goal In Setback To Islanders

The game was moved up a day because of the predicted heavy rain that will be arriving in the area from Hurricane Harvey.

SAN MARCOS, TexasSophomore defender Genesis Turman scored the only goal for the Texas State soccer team Thursday night in a 2-1 setback to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The game was moved up a day because of the predicted heavy rain that will be arriving in the area from Hurricane Harvey.

For the season, the Bobcats drop to 0-2-1 while the Islanders are now 1-1-0. Texas State has gone winless in its last eight matches dating back to last season to tie the school record set in 2003 and matched in 2006.

Less than 30 seconds into the match, Kaylee Davis had a shot blocked and out of bounds for a corner kick. She was able to get her head on a headed ball from Rachel Grout on the ensuing corner but Davis’ flick went wide of the net.

Brooke Ramsey placed the first shot on goal for either team early in the 21st minute. However, her long attempt was easily picked up by the TAMUCC goalkeeper.

A foul by TXST gave the Islanders a free kick from near the left inbound line. Megan Dodd took the free kick and the ball was flicked to the right post by Kaitlyn Joy. Mariah Ramon was there to knock the ball into the net and put the Bobcats behind 1-0 in the 37th minute.

TAMUCC increased their lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Katie Lawrence knocked in a short cross from Kayla Gove.

Exactly one minute later, the Bobcats cut the deficit in half on a free kick from Jessica Pikoff. The Islanders keeper leapt to punch the ball away but whiffed on the attempt. Turman was there in a scrum of players to fire the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and second in her career. Pikoff’s assist was the first of her collegiate career.

TXST had four chances to tie the match in a minute span beginning in the 67th minute. Alyssa Phelan had a diving header attempt blocked. Jordan Konidkoff had the rebound land at her feet but her chance on goal was also deflected away by a defender. Taking an attempt on net was Sydney Kammer early in the 68 minute but her shot was again blocked. After TAMUCC eventually knocked the ball out of the 18-yard box, Kondikoff took a long attempt that saw the ball sail high over the net.

With 13 seconds left in the game, the Bobcats were awarded a free kick from about 20 yards away on the right side of the goal. Pikoff sent in the ball but it eventually deflected off a TXST player for a goal kick to end the contest.

TXST took a season-high 14 shots while holding TAMUCC to nine. Davis led all players with four shot attempts that also tied her career-high. Taking two shots apiece were Kassi Hormuth, Kondikoff and Phelan.

Kathryn Budde got her first start of the season between the posts and made one save. Heather Martin played the entire second half and stopped two shots.

Following the cancelation of Sunday’s home match with McNeese, the Bobcats won’t play again until Friday, Sept. 1 at Northwestern State with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.

All home matches for Texas State are free admission. Parking for fans will be available at the Speck Street Parking Garage along with limited spaces southwest of the Soccer Complex.
