City of San Marcos, Hays County Urge Purgatory Creek Visitors To Avoid Spillway Work Site
Funds for the project come from an Emergency Watershed Protection grant through the Natural Resources Conservation Service with matching funds from the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board and Hays County.
Beginning July 5 visitors to the Purgatory Creek Natural Area in San Marcos will see heavy equipment and materials being moved into the area near the auxiliary spillway at the dam.
The October 2015 floods caused some minor erosion in the area around the auxiliary spillway, and Hays County’s contractor will be working to repair the erosion.
The flood did not affect the integrity of the dam and spillway and they remain structurally sound.
During the repairs visitors are encouraged to stay clear of the dam and spillway area.
The work is expected to cost $171,000 and be completed by August 15.
