Commissioners Court Proclaims January 20 As MLK Day

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court Tuesday proclaimed January 20, 2020, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day in Hays County and invited residents to take part in the events planned to mark the revered civil rights leader’s birthday.

Local, state and national organizations will remember this great man by living the theme of the 2020 holiday – 2020 Vision: Without a Vision the People Perish – according to the proclamation.

Pastor Jonafa Banbury, Secretary of the Dunbar Heritage Association, accepted the proclamation from the Court and reminded everyone that “the vision, the dreams are ongoing and never reached until we reach perfection.”

She invited the public to attend this year’s special observance: a wreath-laying at the Crossroads Memorial on the corner of MLK and LBJ Drives in San Marcos at 9:30 a.m. on January 20 and noted that individuals and businesses are welcome to donate a wreath for the ceremony.

Following the wreath-laying, there will be a silent march to the Dunbar Center at 801 W. MLK Drive, followed by remarks from San Marcos High School Principal Denisha Presley.

The Dunbar Heritage Association is joining the San Marcos Public Library in hosting children’s activities on Saturday, January 18, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with arts and crafts, and a storytime led by San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson.

Children of all ages are invited to attend, and although walk-ins are welcome, those children registered with the library in advance at

“It’s always a privilege to have these events hosted by the Dunbar Heritage Association,” Precinct 1 Commissioner Debbie Gonzales Ingalsbe, who sponsored the proclamation, said. “As far as we know, San Marcos is the only city in the United States that has an intersection of streets named for these two great civil rights proponents, and the wreath ceremony is a touching reminder of our need to continue Dr. King’s legacy.”

Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra said, “Dr. King said, ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ All those who share that belief should be honoring the man who lived it. I strongly believe in justice for all of Hays County and invite everyone to join in the events that honor Dr. King.”
