How Hays County, Texas And The Nation Came To The Rescue

Flood Relief – How much did your local food bank receive and distribute?

 

Memorial Day Weekend 2015, Hays County saw one of the most devastating floods in its history. Many in Wimberley, San Marcos, Martindale, and others located close to the rivers lost their homes, cars, possessions, and they needed help. Our community stepped up to that call in a big way.

 

Food donations started coming in almost immediately when people saw the effects of the storms, and they haven’t stopped yet. We have even shared our Amazon Wish List http://bit.ly/AmazonHCFB, and food has come in from outside of our county! We have received food from Austin, Corpus Christi, Houston, McAllen, New Braunfels, Georgia, California, and even New York! As of June 3rd, 47 tons (93,468 lbs.) has been donated and counting!

 

The two weeks after the flooding, Hays County Food Bank held emergency distributions in Wimberley and Martindale and participated in the Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) in both Wimberley and San Marcos. 404 families (1,438 individuals) affected by the floods were given nonperishable food, water, and bread. We distributed 31 tons of food in total (62,252 lbs.) between these emergency distributions and gave additional food, on top of what we already distribute, to our 40+ partner agencies.

 

We anticipate this being a long term recovery, and we are so grateful everyone has stepped in to help. We will continue to help all those who need it in the Hays County area, and we hope our community continues to support us.
