Janet Helms To Deliver Lecture On Contributions Of Women Of Color To Psychology

SAN MARCOS – Janet Helms, director of the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture and holder of the Augustus Long Professorship in the Department of Counseling, Developmental and Educational Psychology at Boston College, will deliver a lecture on the contributions of women of color to psychology Oct. 17 at Texas State University.

Helms’ lecture will be at 7 PM in the Alkek Teaching Theater. The lecture coincides with the American Psychological Association Exhibit, “I am Psyched,” focusing on the contributions of women of color to psychology Oct. 16 thru 28 on the fourth floor of Alkek Library.

A reception will be held at 5:30 PM on the fourth floor of Alkek preceding the lecture. All events are free and open to the public.

Helms is the author of “A Race Is a Nice Thing to Have: A Guide to Being a White Person or Understanding the White Persons in Your Life.”

She is past president of the Society of Counseling Psychology, a Fellow in Division 17 (Counseling Psychology), Division 45 (Ethnic Diversity) and Division 35 (Psychology of Women) of the American Psychological Association.

She is also a member of the Association of Black Psychologists, the American Psychological Society and the American Educational Research Association.

Helms has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Psychological Assessment and the Journal of Counseling Psychology and is on the Counsel of Research Elders of the Journal of Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology.

She has written more than 60 empirical and theoretical articles and four books on the topics of racial identity and cultural influences on assessment and counseling practice.
