Junior Near Triple-Double Leads Bobcats to Victory Over Islanders

As a team, the Bobcats made 22-of-44 (50.0%) from the field, were 7-for-20 (35.0%) from beyond the arc and 15-for-24 (62.5%) at the free throw line.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Wednesday night in Strahan Coliseum, fans witnessed a peacock show off his colors as junior forward Alex Peacock posted a near triple-double of 21 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in the Texas State men’s basketball team’s 66-53 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 4-3 on the season while the Islanders lost their fifth straight to drop to 1-5.

TAMUCC opened up a 9-5 lead a little under four minutes into the game after a three-pointer by Joseph Kilgore. The final 16:02 of the opening half saw TXST clamp down defensively and hold the visitors to just six points while netting 28 themselves. Peacock netted 13 points in the first 20 points to nearly outscore the Islanders by himself.

A three-pointer by Nijal Pearson at the 18:18 mark of the second half gave the Bobcats their largest lead of the game at 38-18. They would take their second 20-point advantage at 45-25 a little over five minutes later when Peacock converted two free throw attempts.

Over the next 6:08, TAMUCC scored 21 of the next 30 points to cut the TXST lead to 54-46 on Kilgore’s second triple of the night. Peacock would make the frontend of a 1-and-1 but miss the backend. The Bloomington, Illinois native rebounded his miss and kicked it out to Tyler Blount for three-pointer and an odd four-point possession that put the Bobcats up by 12.

The Islanders cut the lead down to single-digits again with 4:49 remaining after two free throws by York Benjamin. TXST held the visitors to just one field goal for the next 4:38 while Pearson scored five of the Bobcats’ final eight points of the game to dash any comeback hopes.

Along with his near triple-double, Peacock tied his career-high with three steals. Eric Terry nearly reached double-figures with nine points as he made 3-of-4 shots and was 3-for-5 at the charity stripe. The redshirt sophomore also rejected two shots.

Pearson contributed eight points, eight rebounds and matched his career best of two blocks. Immanuel King added seven points and eight boards, seven of which came on the defensive glass.

Marlin Davis was the only other TXST player with multiple assists in the contest with four.

For the seventh consecutive game they outrebounded the opponent with a 40-25 advantage tonight with a 12-8 edge on offensive boards that led to an 18-8 lead in second chance points.

Next up for TXST is a trip to Houston to take on Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
