Maroon & Gold Weekly Wrap-Up:

Bobcat Volleyball, Soccer & Baseball

SAN MARCOS, Texas The Texas State soccer team closed out non-conference play Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 setback to McNeese at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The loss ended a nine-match home undefeated streak for the Bobcats.

Overall, TXST is now 4-3-1 on the year while the Cowgirls improved to 4-3-0.

Early in the 13 minute, Kaylee Davis send in a low cross from the right side into the box. The ball found Mackenzie Smith from just inside the six-yard box. The junior flicked it back towards the right corner but saw MCN’s Emma Roccaforte make a diving stop.

Smith would get another great opportunity just over six minutes later. She beat the defender to a through ball but saw Roccaforte snag the ball off her feet to keep the Bobcats off the scoreboard.

Attempts from Haley Groff and Renny Moore in the final 15 minutes of the period were both placed on frame with neither beating the goalkeeper.

The Cowgirls took six shots in the first half with two being on target. Both of those were from long distance and easily handled by Heather Martin.

In the first 35 minutes of the second half, the Bobcats were able to put three shots on goal. All of them were saved by Roccaforte as they all came from at least 18 yards out.

The lone goal of the match came late in the 81st minute. Jillian Bech sent in a hard, low cross that was flicked into the back of the net by Anna Watson to give MCN the advantage.

Moore took a rip from the near side and just outside the 18-yard box early in the 88th minute. Her curling attempt ended up in the hands of the keeper.

A last gasp chance came with 12 seconds left as TXST won a corner kick. Kamaria Williams quickly took the corner and the ball ended up at the feet of Groff just inside the penalty box. Her shot, however, was blocked by a defender. The ball landed in front of Addison Gaetano with three seconds remaining but she was quickly surrounded by three Cowgirls, one of which poked the ball away as the final horn sounded.

The Bobcats held a 16-8 advantage in shots and 8-3 in shots on goal. Smith led all players and matched her career-highs with four shot attempts with three of them being on goal. Moore took three shots and placed two of them on frame. Taking two shots apiece were Ally Kewish, Groff and Williams.

Between the posts, Martin made two saves while playing just the first half. Kathryn Budde played the final 45 minutes and faced only two shots.

Next up for TXST is the start of Sun Belt Conference play. The Bobcats play just once during the first weekend of conference action when they host South Alabama on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Bobcats drop to 4-2-1 on the year while NSU improves to 2-5-0.

Heading into the 24th minute, both teams had taken two shots apiece with the best look on goal coming from Kamaria Williams. The freshman’s first touch after coming in off the bench buzzed the outside of the far post. The Lady Demons netted the lone goal of the contest halfway through the minute when Hallie Field headed home a corner kick from Maddie Scott.

TXST’s last shot of the first half came late in the 28th minute. Renny Moore unleashed an attempt from 25 yards out that smacked off the upper left corner of the crossbar.

In the second half, the Bobcats defense held NSU to just two shots with both coming in the first six minutes of the period. The first missed wide left of the frame and the second saw Kathryn Budde make a diving stop in the bottom left corner.

Moore had the best attempt for Texas State in the second half. In the 56th minute, the junior’s long attempt was heading for the bottom left corner but the Lady Demons’ Acelya Aydogmus made a diving stop at the last second.

Haley Groff got into the box with the ball on the near side and took a shot. Her attempt found the netting but on the outside for a goal kick halfway through the 65th minute.

A couple of minutes later Kaylee Davis took on two defenders, juking them out a couple of times. Before she was able to get a shot off, Aydogmus dove and corralled the ball to end the threat.

The Bobcats controlled possession for most of the final 20 minutes but were unable to get anything going in the final third.

In goal, Budde made the team’s lone save of the night.

Chisum earns 900th career victory in Northweatern State Sweep

COLLEGE STATION, Texas Head coach Karen Chisum becomes the seventh coach in NCAA Division I volleyball to reach 900 wins as Texas State volleyball team swept Northwestern State (25-21, 25-21, 25-15) Friday night at Reed Arena to conclude the Texas A&M Invitational. With the win, the Bobcats are back to .500 this season with a 5-5 record.

Chisum is the 5th coach across all NCAA divisions to reach 900 wins at one program (*Russ Rose – Penn State, Dave Shoji – Hawaii, Andy Banachowski – UCLA, *Chris Catanach – Tampa; * = active coach).

“The most important win was that one [vs. NSU] right there,” said Coach Chisum. “The kids are excited, and it really is great, but now it’s over and we do not have to think about it anymore. Now the big deal is No. 901 with UTSA coming to town.”

The Bobcats dominated in their second sweep of the 2019 campaign as they hit .256 in the match and tied a season-high 49 kills. TXST also totaled 52 digs, 46 assists, five aces, and five blocks. Texas State is 38-2 all-time vs. NSU and extended its winning streak to nine matches in the series.

“I am proud of the team and thought we got better as the match went on,” Chisum added. “We are still not playing 100 percent as strong as we could be, but it was two good wins today, especially playing back-to-back like that. We are still trying to figure out if we have a steady lineup, but the good thing about that is we got depth, and if one person is not getting it done that night, someone else will. That gives us some freedom to play other kids and continue to build their confidence.”Senior outside hitter Cheyenne Huskey recorded her second double-double on the day with a 16-kill 10-dig performance vs. Northwestern. Huskey also had two aces, one assist, and one block. Sophomore outside Janell Fitzgerald hit .480 with 13 kills on 25 swings and one error and led the team with three blocks. Sophomore setter Emily DeWalt directed the offense with 39 assists and had seven digs and five kills. Junior libero Brooke Johnson had a match-high 12 digs and had two assists, and sophomore Kaylie Koenen had two aces.

Junior outside hitter Hannah Brister was the only NSU (6-5) player to reach double figures in kills registering a total of 12 on a .200 hitting percentage. Brister also had nine digs. Senior setter Cayman Sutton and sophomore setter Skylar Besch split 24 assists evenly and Sutton had one of the team’s three service aces. Senior libero Megan Lohmiller led the team with 10 digs and had two assists, and junior outside hitter Darria Williams led the team with four blocks.

Set 1
The Bobcats had a solid start as they took a 10-6 early lead to hint the Lady Demons to take a timeout. NSU rallied back to 17-15 but needed another break when TXST built the lead to 20-16. The Bobcats won the set 25-21 after scoring four of the final six points.

Set 2
The Lady Demons came out ready to play in the second set and jumped out to a 6-2 advantage highlighted by five unanswered points. The Bobcats cut the deficit to 6-5, but NSU built the lead back to 14-9, the largest of the set. Texas State put together a 10-5 run to tie the stanza at 19 and scored six of the next eight points to take the set, 25-21.

Set 3
The Bobcats and Lady Demons logged seven ties prior to Texas State’s 4-0 run to take a 14-9 lead. After both clubs exchanged service errors, TXST gained a 23-14 lead. TXST’s Koenen aced the Lady Demons, and after NSU’s final point, Huskey sealed win No. 900 with a kill.

Texas State will return home next weekend to host its annual Creeds and Crests Classic Sept. 19-21 that will feature matches vs. UTSA, George Washington and Sam Houston State.

Bobcats hold-off pesky Vaqueros in four-set comback

COLLEGE STATION, Texas The Texas State volleyball team picks up a win in its first match on the day with a 3-1 (14-25, 25-20, 25-10,25-20) triumph Friday afternoon over UT Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) at Reed Arena. The Bobcats are now 4-5 this season.

“I am proud of the way we came back,” said head coach Karen Chisum. “We were not particularly bad in the first set, but they [UTRGV] dug everything we hit. Our defense was great, and we stuck in there today. UTRGV can be a great team or they can struggle. Once we got them down some I think they folded a little but then they fought hard the fourth set, so I am very pleased in our fight.”

The Bobcats held the Vaqueros to an opposing team season-low .092 hitting percentage and hit .156 in the match. The Bobcats logged double-figure blocks and service aces for the second time this season as they collected 14 and 10, respectively, and held the match advantage in kills (47-37) and assists (45-35). The Vaqueros had a 65-57 margin in digs. Texas State improved its record to 25-1 all-time vs. UTRGV and have won nine straight in the series.

Texas State’s senior O1 Cheyenne Huskey turned in her 10th career double-double as she matched a season-high 16 kills and had 13 digs. Huskey was also one of five Bobcats to log two aces. Both sophomore middle Jillian Slaughter and freshman outside hitter Lauren Teske registered a season-high eight kills and Slaughter added four blocks and two aces. Sophomore setter Emily DeWalt recorded her third double-double of the season with 40 assists and season-best 12 digs to go along with her four kills and two aces. Sophomore outside Janell Fitzgerald matched a career-high six blocks and had six kills and junior libero Brooke Johnson had a career-high 13 digs. Senior defensive specialists Micah Dinwiddie and Rylie Fuentes each had two aces apiece.

UTRGV’s freshman outside hitter Victoire Nama led the team with 12 kills followed by senior outside and captain Barbara Silva’s 10 kills. Junior setter Debora Nazario had a double-double with 28 assists and 13 digs, sophomore outside Sarah Cruz had a team-high five blocks, and junior libero Samaret Caraballo had a match-high 21 digs. Both Caraballo and Cruz had four service aces to lead all players.

Set 1
Both clubs went back-and-forth to a 10-10 tie until UTRGV went on a massive 9-0 run to create separation before TXST’s freshman outside Caitlan Buettner got a kill to bring the count to 19-11. The Vaqueros kept the momentum, however, and ended the set with a 6-3 run capped off by back-to-back aces for a 25-14 victory.

Set 2
A 4-0 burst by the Bobcats gave the team an 8-5 early lead to force the Vaqueros first timeout of the match. However, the designated home team regrouped and tied the set at 13 before an ace gave UTRGV a 14-13 lead. It was not until 17-16 that the Bobcats regained the lead for good and scored eight of the final 12 points to win the frame 25-20.

Set 3
The Bobcats dominated the opposition to take the lead in the match. Although the Vaqueros battled back to a one-point deficit after an early 5-1 Bobcat lead, the Maroon and Gold answered with a 14-2 scoring run for a 21-8 lead and ultimately won the set comfortably, 25-10.

Set 4
The Vaqueros worked hard to force a fifth set and held an 11-8 advantage early to force a Bobcat timeout. On the other side of the break, TXST scored three-in-a-row for the tie but finally got over the hump for the fourth lead change of the set at 20-19 after a Huskey kill. Dinwiddie followed with an ace, and Huskey found the floor again for a 22-19 advantage. TXST went on to win the set 25-20 thanks to three consecutive UTRGV errors.

Texas State will be back on the floor at 5 p.m. to play Northwestern State.

Errors plague Bobcat comeback at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas The Texas State volleyball team’s comeback efforts came up short as they fell to Texas A&M 3-1 (11-25, 25-19, 21-25, 20-25) Thursday night at Reed Arena, bringing their record to 3-5 this season.

“Excluding the first set, we were in the match but had too many errors,” said head coach Karen Chisum. “I thought we passed pretty well. But no aces, 11 service errors and a .090 hitting percentage is not a winning recipe. It was another good opportunity we let slip away. Hats off to Texas A&M. Now we have to think about our two matches tomorrow.”

Despite holding the Aggies (5-1) to a .171 hitting percentage, the Bobcats hit .090 and registered zero service aces for the second time this season. Texas A&M held the advantage in all statistical measures including aces (6-0), assists (44-42), digs (51-43), and blocks (13-9). The Bobcats are now 6-26 in the all-time series vs. the Aggies.

Sophomore outside hitter Janell Fitzgerald led the Bobcats in kills with 11 and added two blocks. Senior outside Cheyenne Huskey and junior Tyeranee Scott followed with nine kills, and Scott logged a team-best six blocks. Sophomore setter Emily DeWalt had a match-high 34 assists and eight digs, and junior defensive specialist Brooke Johnson paced the team with nine digs and turned in four assists.

Texas A&M’s senior outside hitter Hollan Hans led all players with 12 kills and had seven assists and one ace, while freshman outside hitter Lauren Davis finished with 11 kills. Junior middle blocker Makena Patterson nearly recorded a double-double with nine kills and a match-high nine blocks. Junior setter Camille Conner led the Aggie offense with 33 assists and paced the team with two aces, and senior libero Camila Gomez had a match-high 23 digs.

Set 1
The Aggies went wire-to-wire and jumped out to a 14-2 lead before the Bobcats woke up and later trimmed the deficit as little as eight points, 16-8. A&M got the lead back up to double-digits, however, and won the set 25-11. Huskey led TXST with three kills in the set.

Set 2
The Bobcats returned the favor and led the entirety of the second frame, putting together a 15-7 run to open the set. After the media timeout, the Aggies began to mount a comeback by scoring eight of the next 12 points to force a Bobcat timeout. Although Texas A&M continued to chip away at the lead and got within four points at 22-18, the Bobcats overcame the threat and won the set 25-19 after a kill from Fitzgerald to even the match at one set apiece.

Set 3
The third set was a tight one that featured 11 ties and five lead changes. Texas State led 3-1 before A&M went on a 5-0 scoring run to secure the match’s first lead change. Four ties later, the Bobcats strung together consecutive points to regain the lead at 12-10 just for the Aggies to score three unanswered, forcing the Bobcats into a timeout down 13-12. Later with the score tied at 16, Texas A&M created some distance with a 6-1 run to build the set’s largest lead at 22-17 and ultimately won the set, 25-21.

Set 4
Texas A&M held an early 9-5 advantage and built its lead to as many as six points at 17-11. The Bobcats continued to fight and scored seven of the next 11 points, but the Aggies staved off the comeback to win the set, 25-20.

Up next for Texas State are two matches on Sept. 13 vs. UT-Rio Grande Valley (12:30 p.m.) and Northwestern State (5 p.m.).
