Miller Middle School Hosts AVID Family Night
AVID is a non-profit helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-center approach.

On Monday, October 22, San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District held a family night for the Advancement Via Independent Determination (AVID) program at Miller Middle School.
This year, SMCISD has implemented AVID district wide. AVID is a non-profit helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-center approach.
The organization has partnered with more than 6,400 schools in 47 states across the U.S., plus schools in Department of Defense Education, Canada, and Australia. Its programs serve nearly 2 million students in grades K-12 and 50 post-secondary institutions.
According to their website, the organization trains 70,000 educators annually to close the opportunity gap, so they can prepare all students for college, career and life; the AVID programs started at Clairemont High School in San Diego in the 1980s and grew with funding for the California
By partnering with AVID, SMCISD receives professional development, a suite of resources and ongoing support to “ensure a lasting impact that maximizes their return on investment.”
Throughout the school year, SMCISD campuses will host AVID Family Nights to give parents an insight look into the program.
Families will be able to see their students’ work, take part in AVID activities and interact with AVID staff.
