Texas State Soccer Hosts Georgia Southern And Faces Red Wolves On The Road

This season head coach Kat Conner and the soccer team are raising funds in support of women fighting ovarian cancer through the Goals2CureTM initiative.

San Marcos, TexasThe Texas State soccer team hosts its first Sun Belt Conference match of the season at the Bobcat Soccer Complex on Friday at 7 p.m. against Georgia Southern. On Sunday, the Bobcats hit the road to face Arkansas State that is set for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Entering the weekend, TXST is 3-4-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in conference play after beating Georgia State and then falling to Coastal Carolina last weekend. The Eagles are 3-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the SBC with a victory over the Chanticleers while the Red Wolves sport a 5-3-0 mark and 1-1-0 in conference action.

Rachel Grout paces the Bobcats with three goals, three assists and nine points. The senior has tallied a goal in each of the team’s three victories and provided the match-winner in two of them.

Netting two goals apiece has been Kaylee Davis, Kassi Hormuth and Renny Moore. Credited with a two assists each are Jordan Kondikoff and Jessica Pikoff.

In net, Heather Martin started both contests last weekend and finished with a 1.00 GAA, seven saves and a .778 save percentage. For the season, she sports a 1.50 GAA and a .739 save percentage with 17 stops. Kathryn Budde has appeared in six matches and totaled a 1.13 GAA, 13 saves and a .722 save percentage.

Scouting Georgia Southern

Georgia Southern defeated CCU on the road last Friday 1-0. All three of the Eagles’ victories have been shutouts with others coming against Gardner-Webb (1-0) and Sienna (3-0). Their losses have been to Florida Gulf Coast, Montana and Washington State while their draw was a scoreless contest against Kennesaw State.

Leading GS with two goals apiece are Nicole Aussin and Frida Brattum. Contributing a goal each has been Juvenia Hylton and Sarah Price. An assist apiece has been credited to Ashton Adams, Asha Villaythong and Hylton. The only player to have taken double-digit shots this season is Villaythong while Hylton and Price have attempted nine shots apiece.

In goal, Lauren Karinshak has started all seven matches and comes into Friday with a 1.04 GAA, 29 saves and a .806 save percentage. Her four shutouts this year are the most in the Sun Belt. Daniela Estrada has made an appearance off the bench. She played the second half against FGCU in which she allowed three goals on the four shots she faced and did not make a save.

Series vs. Eagles

The all-time series between TXST and GS is tied 1-1-1. Last season saw the Bobcats fall on the road 1-0. The lone win for TXST in the series came at home on Oct. 25, 2015 by the score of 3-1 on the team’s Senior Day.

Scouting Arkansas State

Arkansas State enters the weekend coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to Louisiana and a 4-1 victory over Troy at home in the opening weekend of conference play. Prior to hosting Texas State on Sunday, the Red Wolves host in-state rival Little Rock on Friday afternoon. ASU has non-conference wins over Central Arkansas, Missouri State, Oral Roberts and UT Martin while dropping matches to Lipscomb and Saint Louis.

Sarah Sodoma has scored a team-high five goals and Dana O’Boye has found the back of the net three times. Others to score multiple times are Maggie Ertl, Hailey Furio and Victoria MacIntosh. Leading the Red Wolves with two assists are Riley Ebenroth, Bailey Reed, Ertl and Furio.

Kelsey Ponder has started five contests between the posts. For the season, she has a 0.59 GAA, 28 saves and a SBC leading .903 save percentage. The junior made four saves in the victory over the Trojans on Sunday. Making three starts in goal is Megan McClure. The freshman surrendered two goals and made a save in the conference opening loss to the Ragin’ Cajuns. She has a 1.65 GAA and .762 save percentage with 16 stops on the year.

Series vs. Red Wolves

Texas State holds a 3-2 lead in the all-time series over Arkansas State. Last year the Red Wolves won 1-0 in San Marcos after finding the back of the net with just under five minutes to play off a corner kick. The Bobcats last win came on Sept. 27, 2015 at home in a 3-2 overtime contest. Prior to last season’s loss, TXST had won three straight in the series.

The players and staff are collecting pledges for each goal scored this season. Donations will go directly to benefit a scholarship program through the Texas Oncology Foundation.
