Reading as a Main Course: A Book Tasting at Mendez Elementary
Fourth grade teachers at Mendez Elementary served up reading as a main course at the school’s Open House on September 22, 2016. They used a Book Tasting event as a way to get students to sample the genres they had been studying in Reader’s Workshop since the beginning of the school year, exploring traditional and realistic books with their parents.
Using a menu, students chose a book as an appetizer, a main course, and a dessert. Most agreed that it was a delicious way to introduce 4th graders and families these genres of fiction, and many students realized after the fact that they had acquired a “taste” for a new type of literature.
