Two candidates running for Hays County Judge in the upcoming primary election are currently in a legal battle. The lawsuits emerged over allegations of current Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra spreading defamatory rumors about opponent Branden Burleson. 

Burleson’s grandmother is petitioning for a Temporary Restraining Order from Becerra’s wife due to a verbal argument during a MLK celebration on the Hays County Courthouse lawn. 

The San Marcos Fire Department was dispatched to El Gulfo de Mexico restaurant, for a reported structure fire on Monday, Feb. 7th. There were no civilian injuries and one minor injury to a firefighter. Fire investigators are currently conducting their investigation to determine the cause of the fire. 

A grand jury in Caldwell County indicted Martindale resident Terry Turner for the murder of Adil Dghoughi, who was killed when Turner shot him in his driveway in Martindale on Oct. 11, 2021. The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office arrested him 11 days later. 

The Hays County Commissioners Court proclaimed February 2022 as Spay/Neuter Awareness Month and urged all residents of Hays County to help control pet overpopulation. Spaying and neutering pets will help reduce the number of animals impounded at the regional animal shelter in San Marcos, which has been at critical overcrowding capacity for many weeks.

The San Marcos Planning and Zoning Commission denied a request from developer Jared Schenk to develop a purpose-built student housing development located at the intersection of North Fredericksburg Street and Pat Garrison Street. The proposed development was a five-story student housing apartment with 139 units and 349 bedrooms. 

On January 31st, Texas State University returned to in-person classes after the first two weeks of the spring semester began virtually due to the spread of the Omicron COVID-19 Variant. In just their first week back on campus, Texas State students and staff had to take two more days off of instruction due to last week’s winter storm. 

Steve Holeman was named the new head coach of the Texas State soccer team by Director of Athletics Don Coryell on Wednesday.   Holeman is the second-ever head coach in the program’s history. 

On Monday, February 14th, a portion of the two-way bicycle lane on Guadalupe Street in downtown San Marcos will open to the public. 

Love is in the air in San Marcos as the city works to provide fun events for residents this Valentine’s Day. A mailbox has been placed downtown in Kissing Alley for people to send their Valentines Day letters from. 

Those interested in sending a letter to a loved one can do so by writing and addressing their letter along with a postage stamp and dropping it in the Love Downtown mailbox located in front of the “78666” mural. San Marcos is also hosting a “Love is in the air” date night on February 14 on the Hays County historic Courthouse lawn.
