San Marcos Mural Arts Committee Calls For Artists For Two New Mural Projects

The San Marcos Mural Arts Committee is issuing calls for artists for two mural projects this spring. The City of San Marcos supports public art and graffiti-abating murals through various grants.

Conoco Fast Stop Stores # 6

The Mural Arts Committee seeks to commission a professional visual artist or artist team to design and paint a mural, with input from local residents, on two exterior walls of the Conoco Fast Stop Stores #6, 1101 Highway 123, San Marcos, Texas.

The artist stipend for this project is $8,000, and materials for the project will be provided by the City of San Marcos.

This location is at a gateway into the city of San Marcos located in the Barrio Pescado neighborhood, which has a rich history and vibrant Latino culture. The Mural Arts Committee recognizes this as a great location to add vibrant art to the east side of San Marcos, a high traffic area with lots of visibility.

Sessom Drive Retaining Wall

The Mural Arts Committee also seeks to commission a professional visual artist or artist team to design and paint a mural on a retaining wall located along Sessom Drive, below Treehouse Apartments and east of the San Marcos Center shopping area.

The project must display imagery that expresses the theme in line with the Edwards Aquifer. Imagery can be simple or graphic representatives to relay the idea as long as it promotes at least one or more of the following themes:

  • Underground visualization of the Edwards Aquifer and native species
  • Recharge features
  • Environmental Stewardship
  • Or images related to the above artistic themes

The artist stipend for this project is $18,000.  Materials for the project will be provided by the City of San Marcos.
