Hays County Courthouse, TX – It’s Kitten Season, which means this is the time of year when the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter (SMRAS) sees hundreds of orphaned kittens come in.

In their continued efforts to help find homes and fosters for the pets that come into the shelter, they periodically offer a monthly adoption special. Adoption-ready animals are only $21 through the end of May. The SMRAS, although located in San Marcos, is partially funded by and serves all of Hays County.

Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra encourages the community to help. “Homeless animals are a community issue, your help provides the community solutions.”

Judge Becerra’s Animal Advocate Advisor Sharri Boyett suggests the following ways to help:

Foster and Adoptions: Open your home to foster or adoption. The shelter can be loud and scary, so opening your home to foster a pet means they can relax and come out of their shell. Kitten fosters are very needed during this time. Visit https://www.sanmarcostx.gov/2885/Become-a- Foster to learn more about Kitten Season and how to become a foster. Fosters help fulfill the shelter’s mission to care for, protect, and find quality homes for abandoned and neglected pets. Every pet that goes into foster care allows another needy pet to come into the shelter off the streets.

Adoptions: All adoptions are first come by in-person adoption. Visit https://www.sanmarcostx.gov/3259/Adoptable-Animals and select the pet(s) you’re interested in meeting and fill out the adoption application. If the location or bio of the pet you are interested in says “foster,” it is not at the shelter, so please email foster@sanmarcostx.gov for more information and to meet the pet. Afterwards, come to the shelter during open hours, call 512- 805-2657, or email animaladoptions@sanmarcostx.gov to discuss your interest. All adoptions include spay/neuter, vaccinations and medications, a microchip, vet exam, and 30 days of free pet health insurance.

You can visit https://www.sanmarcostx.gov/3259/Adoptable-Animals to get more information about each animal!

Volunteers: If you’re unable to adopt or foster, consider becoming a volunteer. Being a part of the SMRAS Volunteer Program is such a rewarding experience! Duties include cleaning and feeding animals, grooming and exercising animals, clerical work, adoption counseling/ interactions, special projects, and outreach events. Donations: The SMRAS always accepts donations! For the month of May, the shelter is asking for interactive cat toys, plastic frisbees, canned dog and puppy food, training treats, baby blankets, kitten milk, and kitten food. You can bring your donations to the adoption side of the shelter and leave them by the donations table or hand them to a shelter employee.
